The best "story" so far....

Coach says it every year....for the team to be successful, good "stories" have to emerge. We've had quite a few this year:

1. Cole Fisher, as a 5th year senior, emerging out of nowhere during fall camp and currently 2nd on the team in tackles.
2. Parker Hesse, an undersized redshirt freshman, thrust into the starting lineup at DE after a season ending injury to Ott and holding his own.
3. Desmond King, shaking off a sophomore slump, leads the nation in interceptions.
4. Akrum Wadley, a little used RB, shakes off a nasty case of the fumbles and fills in when our top 2 RBs go down with injuries and currently leads the team in ypc and 2nd overall in rush yards.
5. CJ Beathard, a backup QB for 2 years, emerges as the starter during a January program shakeup and has yet to lose a game as a starting QB while becoming the unquestioned leader and toughest guy on the team.

I'm sure there's more that I haven't named....but it's obvious that plenty of stories have emerged this year.

What's everyone else's favorite so far?

Hesse looks so small out there going against left tackles. I know he's fighting and scrapping and put in a tough spot but.... I don't know...

When you look at all the adversity that Jake Rudock had to overcome to get to where he is today and to lead a winning football team to a championship is really incredible. After how all the so-called fans abused him for so long it's great to see.

Ruddock at Michigan was not an easy start until Harbaugh realized that he can't throw the deep ball. We have talent but Michigan has better athletes. Adjusting the offense AROUND Ruddock has made the whole team better. Plus, he did not have any spring ball with that team. Deep inside I how Michigan wins out so we can play them. Doubt it happens but would be nice to see King with a few picks against Ruddock........

Best story has to be CJ and his leadership and toughness. When a a play needs made, he makes it.

Most impressive has to go to King. Been a great corner since he stepped on campus but this year continues to be a Monster year.

I've been a big sucker for the Oline story:

Starting in January with a new depth chart released, the offensive line had two seniors, 3 underclassmen, and those underclassmen were at the tackle positions. We ALL thought it would be a disaster and CJ would be running for his life and taking huge sacks. And we were wrong. And then there were injuries all along the line. And even with a patchwork line that would then include a true freshman went on to pave the way (nearly literally, what a bunch of road-graders) for two different RBs (the 2nd and 4th string at the beginning of the season) to rush for 200 yards in back to back games (not done in college football since 1996!). The story of the year is everybody on the O-line, the O-line coaches, and Brian Ferentz taking every harbinger of doom expectation we had and turning them around and even doing it with hefty injuries. THAT is Iowa football and the Iowa story.

Not a bad take

yes Rudock facing Beathard in the BigTen CCG would be the best story.

But we are all getting ahead of ourselves.

Dillon Kidd increasing his yardage by 12-14 yrds and pinning balls within the 15 consistently.

Overall team tackling has been great & getting the team off the field on 3rd downs much better.

Nate Meier

Agree with PCHawk about Jewell. He's got the energy & character this D has been missing for a couple yrs.

the best story by far is Kirk Ferentz. Almost everyone wanted him gone and just look at his status now. Good shot at B1G coach of the year and 12-0 may get him National COY.

Great input so far!

I agree with the poster talking about the OL. The growth from the last open practice where CJ was "sacked" about 37 times and the RBs had no holes to run thru, until now, has been outstanding.

Dillon Kidd has been a great story as well.

And the coaching staff, as a whole, has been nothing short of phenomenal. From the offensive playcalling, to the defensive adjustments, to the kicking game....everything has been great!

KF finally listening to the message board crowd and making the necessary changes to get the team moving in the right direction again is the best story in my opinion.

I know it might sound a little bit out-of-the-box, but what Sam B Richardson has done in Ames has been incredible. He has been the face of the offense for three years now and has handled himself with class despite all the setbacks over the years. Just look at all the games he started for the Cyclones. Its not easy changing offensive coordinators or winning despite an average or mediocre defense. He has been a team player and even after losing the starting job he has carried himself with pride and helped his teammates. His story is the Iowa Hawkeye's of 2015.

There were times last year when he was simply overmatched. His ability to set the edge and funnel everything inside where linebackers/safeties can clean up is so much better this year.

IIRC, Drew Ott got thrown in as a true or RS Freshman because of injury and he was about 235-45. I hope Hesse turns out 80 % as good as Ott.

Still feel terrible for Ott as far as a bad football circumstance, how good could this defense be with him getting 60 snaps a game.
