The best hawkeyes that never were

Anyone remember a BB player named James Speed. Came in highly touted. Never played a game. Got some desiese that causes blindness, Tragedy

Tavian Banks - He did eventually live up to and exceed the hype his senior year but can you imagine what could have been if Fry let him play more instead of wait for Shaw to move on.

We did get to see it, in the 1996 game at Penn State that we won 21-20. The stars of the game may have been Tim Dwight and his 83-yard punt return, along with a 25-yard halfback pass from 3rd-string redshirt freshman RB Rob Thein to Demo Odems early in the 4th qtr. following a Penn State fumble that set up the go-ahead TD. But Banks, subbing for an injured Cedric Shaw, rushed for 123 yards (on 26 carries) with no fumbles in the driving rain against a stout Nittany Lion defense. We just plain don't pull out that win without his superb running that day.

His reward? Going back to the bench the next week, and hardly being heard from the rest of the season.

I was thinking of Jared Devries' brother, Dustin. Came in with a lot of hope/hype but ended up transferring to S. Dakota or some such place.

Some guys can handle that sort of life-altering event. Some can't. Wegher apparently fell into the latter category.
And some posters have a constistent bias (against Wegher, in this case), but oh no, not against Ferentz. How does Iowa's football program come out in all this?

i thought he transferred to UNI. I could be wrong on this, but I thought the majority of his schollie offers came from fcs schools. Didn't most people know he wasn't his brother and would be a project?

Kyle Williams. A true 5-star player who unfortunately was a thug and liked to hit women.
But strictly speaking, on the field, under proper guidance, may have been a better, faster meaner Larry Station.

I'll add....what might have happened to Iowa's generational football program had Forrest Evachevski remained as coach and/or AD?

Um, I think the Bonecrusher liked to do more than just hit women. Kudos to Ferentz for realizing that guy was a nutjob the moment he set foot on campus. Made it Joe Tiller's problem. I may bash Ferentz from time to time, but that was his greatest coaching move and getting that guy out of town showed a lot of respect for the program and took a lot of guts.

Wait. I thought it was Ferentz who should have a surrogate because he can't evaluate talent?
