The all transfer teams

Pretty stark contrast between schools like Iowa and others in / out of the big 10 and ISU, New Mexico, Oregon, etc. Seriously, do these programs troll for transfers? The odds seem long for some random player from (insert name of school) to suddenly decide to transfer to Eugene, OR, Ames, IA. Albuquerque, NM, not to metion 3, 4, 5 guys / a whole team. Outside of Singler and the other guard, did Oregon have any guys that were not transfers?

Anyway, I still think we need to address our lack of size down low. Lots of guys at the 4-5 spot, but I don't see anyone in the next 2 years capable of being a "presence" down low. I think we can score enough to stay with most teams, but we need interior defense and rebounding. Juco makes the most sense, as we will hopefully have a couple guys "ready" to police the glass in two years.

I said in the next two years. I don't see Woodbury, Meyer or Olaseni being physical enough to impact interior play in the big ten until (best case scenario) their sophomore year.

Do you recall what Meyers Leonard did as a freshman? Not much.

Look at our roster next year.

We have bigs: McCabe,White,Gabe,Melsahn,Meyer,Woodbury-6 guys for the 4-5 slots

Now look at our 2-3 slots- Marble, Oglesby,Ingram, with May an injury question mark......3-4 guys for 2 slots.

We need more help at the wing positions than down low. If we added a 7th guy for one of the 2 power slots, we probably have someone transfer. No playing time for 3 of those guys, maybe.

Our bigs will get stronger. It is not time to overreact to one aberrational game. We were short yesterday with McCabe and Mel trying to hold the fort. Adding 3 guys who are 6'10 or bigger can offset the bulk deficiency. Gabe, Meyer and Woody will help next year. We need a mature wing, who can help stop penetration that puts our bigs at a disadvantage.

How many teams in the B1G have a legit center? Not many that I can think of, especially when Leonard leaves Illinois this year. With the incoming freshman, we will have more than enought height to compete night in and night out in the B1G.

We are going to have some growing pains, no doubt about that, but we will be much more solid down low next year than we were this year.

I used to be of the thought that we needed a JUCO big man, but I've come around to the thinking that we need another slasher/scoring wing player that can get to the hoop. The roster has a lot of young big men and defections could be a problem if you start trying to bring in JUCOs to play over them. What this team needs is another Marble type player, with a little more bulk and a little more hops. If Spearman is that guy, go get him.
On topic of the OP, it is interesting to see some of these schools with all the transfers. For the most part it seems to be teams that have relatively new coaches at that school trying to kick start their programs (ISU, Oregon, etc). But I can't understand why Alford has so many transfers. I'm sure that has something to do with the Mtn West Conf. If you had left a USC, Arizona, Cal, etc type team and were given the offer to come play at NM and compete for the conference title and play in the tourney it would be pretty enticing. It also seems like some of these coaches have problems reeling in high level talent to play all 4 years, so they have to go the JUCO or transfer route. Its interesting for sure and definately works for some programs.

It just seems too random to me I guess. How one team, any team, can identify all these dudes from coast-to-coast and get them to commit despite probably not knowing anything about them until they announce they are leaving. I would assume it has something to do with admission standards being easier to navigate at certain schools and a "culture". Not picking on ISU, but man what are the odds of landing all those guys from all the different programs (and getting them in)?

Having recruited them out of high school helps.

Fran knows he needs another strong wing player to help man the fort while the young guys get stronger. Pretty sure he if he can get a strong transfer he will encourage Eric May to take an early injury retirement.

Pretty easy when you only have 3 scholarship players. And for the record of the 5 transfers that got a lot of time on ISU's team this year, two were academic all-big 12 players, one graduated and will be taking grad classes next year while finishing his eligibility, White had a GPA in the 3.0 range, and I don't know about Babb but the guy has been in college for 4 years with no classroom trouble yet so I figure he's probably okay there. And for the billionth time, admission standards are the same at ISU and Iowa.

I don't get the obsession with the transfer thing. I just don't get it.

I really don't get it either. I did not have a problem the experiment and CFH had success with it. At least this year. I think he knows what he is doing.

Its an unconventional way of doing things. People don't like unconventional.

I personally don't mind it, but it can be risky so as long as it works out, no big deal.

Transfers don't workout so well for iowa i.e anthony hubbard. Maybe iowa should stick to recruiting soft second tier talent- compete with schools like creighton, uni, drake, etc..

Nice try, but for the point of this discussion, JUCOs aren't the same as transfers.

The rest of your post is also pathetically inaccurate.

Jeez, I must have missed it, but I don't recall Iowa being competitive with Creighton or UNI this past season.

South Florida started 4 transfers in their loss yesterday. Freshman guard Anthony Collins is the only starter who signed with USF directly out of high school. The rest of USF’s starting lineup has transfers from Arizona State (sophomore forward Victor Rudd), Kansas State (senior forward Ron Anderson Jr.), Maryland (senior forward Augustus Gilchrist) and Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College (senior guard Hugh Robertson).
