That's it ... I'm crying uncle

I'm inviting you all to bash the bejeezus out of me. So here goes ...

I love the Hawkeyes. I love Iowa City. I loved my time there. I graduated in the mid 1980s, and made my best friends in life there. I have made it a point to come back to Iowa City every other year or so from Southern California to go to at least one game. I traveled across the country to the Outback Bowl last year. I'll always love the Hawks and I will always be thrilled when they pull out a victory.

But I'm not going to do it to myself anymore. I'm not going to slavishly watch them do the same thing week after week, keeping it close with whatever pansy opponent they face, caring more about winning the turnover battles more than winning the game. I only have so much time to give to football.

My daughter is going to UCLA this year. I was at the 1986 Rose Bowl -- when Iowa lost to UCLA and Ronnie Harmon cashed in. I would never have believed it then ... but I am now a UCLA season ticket holder.

I'll never have the same love for UCLA that I have for Iowa, but the time has come to at least look forward to watching entertaining football where the team I'm watching is playing to win, rather than playing not to lose. So go ahead, call me a traitorous rat. I surrender.

Congrats on your daughter getting into UCLA. That's no small feat.

When my daughter went to UCF, my allegiance never changed, but I certainly wanted to be "supportive" of her. Oddly enough, football was more "social" for her, whereas I actually cared about the games!

Not a traitorous rat at all...

Thanks much, Thunder. You're right ... it's gotten very hard to get in there. And she's saving her papa a boatload of dough by doing so.

Many people stopped watching Lickliter basketball, only to begin again when the pain stopped. Or at least we get to watch competitive basketball, again.

We'll see you again in a few years, SoCal, when KF moves/is moved on.

Hopefully the next hire will be a long term good one.

Yours is a perfectly rational position, no need to apologize to any "fans". The sad truth is that the Iowa football program under KF's "leadership" is in danger of running aground because the captain is living in a world of indecision and denial. I still hope he can see what needs to be done to turn the offense around but my hope is diminishing with each game. I am a '77 graduate of Iowa so my freshman year was the 0-11 season under Frank Lauterbur and even though their record was poor, they played hard, they never gave up, they certainly never played "not to lose". I would like to see that kind of mentality again at Iowa, is that too much to ask?

Sooo...is your daughter 18 yet?

Ok - YOU'RE A TRAITOROUS RAT!

Go ahead and turn on KirkFer and abandon the Hawks during one of their times of need for that Pac-12 fluffy sizzle. Good luck getting that one past the Pearly Gates. Hey, it's your soul, man but don't come 'round here beggin' to get ur seat back on the wagon once KirkFer and that G.d. "offensive" coordinator overcome "the challenges of trying to put things together". It'll happen, you'll see. Right about the time your daughter graduates from UCLA you'll be lookin' to the East and wonderin', "What's that there, up in the sky? Is it Superman?" NO, it's Greg Davis riding a black-n-gold Hawk on a 200 mph dive honed in on sinking its talons right into your treacherous, powder blue heart.

Don't blame you a bit. Enjoy entertaining competitive football.

What you did right there? Poetry. I tip my hat to you, sir.

I say good for both of you. Enjoy your time at the UCLA games. I must say I'm a bit envious. You're going to get to see a lot of entertaining football.

Yep, me too. If we can't beat an 0-2 isu on our home field, I quit too. I'm not going I waste my time, money, and invest myself in the hawks if I have to look at paw ******* whoades pumping his ******* fist at the isu band on our home field after the game. I just won't do it. I'm not going to force myself to walk to my car after a game with isu looking at those d bags gloat after the beat us 10 ******* times in 17 years. I can take a loss to Michigan, msu, even Minnesota, but not the worst program in college football. Unacceptable. No thanks. I won't be back until they get **** figured out.

Well said and perfectly describes my position now, with KF and my position with Lickliter. I now look forward to basketball season much more than football season.

Congrats on your daughter getting into UCLA. That's no small feat.

I got into UCLA too, but I decided to go to the REAL University of California.

Actually, I grew up in an SC family so they didn't like either option.

I am an Alumni of CAL and Iowa and work for another FBS school. The split loyalty helps to keep me from going over the edge.

Enjoy your couple of years of good UCLA Football.

So, what is the tempature of the UCLA fans right now about Mora? I know they slipped by Texas by 3 pts, and Memphis by 7 and Va. by 8 pts, but wasn't this UCLA team supposed to be a juggernaut? Pac 12 is tough, so they might end up with a worse record than iowa, but hey, free country....enjoy the cheerleaders!

I think the fans are pretty high on Mora. In two years, he has changed the culture of the program, recruited well, energized the fan base, spearheaded fund raising for new facilities, and done about everything you can ask of a coach. You can tell that he plays to win. If somebody throws an interception, so be it, but they're going to take their shots. But you're right, this year they have not overwhelmed anybody. In game 1 they scored three defensive touchdowns and beat UVA by 7. The offensive line sucked and it was ugly. In game 2, the offense looked solid but the defense couldn't stop Memphis. Game 3, Hundley got hurt, and UCLA survived against a motivated and angry Texas in Arlington. I think that was probably a huge learning experience for them.

Hundley, by the way, is really, really good. He's like Terrelle Pryor, but a much better passer. My Hawk season ticket holder buddy from Johnston, IA is coming out to go to the UCLA-Oregon game with me, and I'm excited to watch good football with another Hawk.
