That Time Kirk Beat Nick Saban

I did it a few years ago where I went back and counted all of the players that went pro on both teams and the number was pretty incredible. It was a great game, and from what I remember from most of the season the defense carried us and Tate did just enough in clutch times to carry us over the hump to get a key score or a crucial first down. It is really too bad that the stars have never aligned for Iowa to have all these great units all on the same team. Iowa has had some really good teams but there has always been that one glaring weakness that has hurt us.

I was on the press box side during the game among the Iowa hoard. I had lost my voice by the start of the 4th quarter. So when the miracle happened, all I could do is fall back into the Iowa mosh pit and fist pump. Man, what a great day.

Our Coach.

People are forgetting how truly great the 2004 defense was. Our offense really wasn't that good that year, but Tate was certainly dynamic and dangerous with his arm and his scrambling ability.

Not to mention Special teams. We blocked two punts in that game, one for a TD. We were disruptive enough that LSU had to kick a PAT from about 80 yards, and held them when they went for 2 two different times. And of course, the KOR from Walner Belleus after LSU scored the go-ahead TD. While not a huge return, it did put us in better position to start the drive than a simple touchback or a mere "average" return.

In addition, 50+ yard punts. Nowadays we struggle to boot it further than 30.

I was processing copious amounts of beer. Sinking into my seat...realizing that Iowa is probably going to lose. My buddies were indifferent and consoled me. The play happened and everyone... screamed and jumped. They were not even iowa fans.
