Thad Matta: Good coach?

His recruiting ability is undeniable, but how good of an in-game coach is he?

They had the most talented team in the country last year IMO and lost in the sweet sixteen. Ridiculously talented this year and could potentially lose their 2nd non-conference game already (to a less talented team).

I realize Sullinger's been banged up but even the backups were highly recruited coming out of high school. I feel like theres only a handful of teams that can even matchup with them.

I think in college basketball, it is 97% recruiting and 3% coaching. Coaching is grossly overrated at the highest level.

Coaches decide nearly every decision involving practices, games, workout programs, scheduling, player development, the list goes on. Not sure how you can say its 3%.

Teams carried by freshmen typically don't win national championships (see: Sullinger/Oden at OSU, just about any team coached by Calipari).

Come tournament time, experience means as much, if not more than talent.

I think Matta is a slightly above average in game coach. His reluctance to use his bench is concerning.

It may not be..

97 to 3 percent in terms of recruiting vs. coaching, but recruiting is of the utmost importance. If you can't get good players, the rest doesn't matter.

Yes, coaches develop practice plans, workout programs, etc., but those any coach who has experience and who has paid attention during his coaching life can do those things. You still won't beat your opponent if he has far better players on his roster.

Matta is solid enough in-game coach it would appear. Gives his team a good plan and freedom to go execute it.

We will see in March, this will be the first time Matta has had the kind of talent return and have sit on the bench.

Matta has to be a pretty solid coach or he wouldn't have built Butler, Xavier and got the OSU job. He has built some pretty good mid-major schools and moved up through the ranks.
