Texas A&M - Commerce

I listened to the game on SiriusXM, no pay per view for me!

Got off to a rocky start but eventually the vets took over. Five guys finished in double figures, Freeman, Payton, Pryce, Dix and Thelwell, that was good.

What's up with Seydoux, he's not even showing in the box score?

Traore was injured and held out last night.

I was really impressed with Iowa last night. I realize the first half was close but a lot of these 1st few games might be close in the first half as roles are established for this team. I thought they were able to get defensive stops when they needed to. I mean, I don't think Fran is going to lean on Kingsbury in the first half of too many games this year...but went to him in game 1 if that makes sense. They need another big, somehow, someway. I think the thought was that was going to be Traore, I don't know his status.

Thelwell played really well, and he's going to push Brock. Pryce Sandfort is going to grow up right in front of this year as ya just feel like he's on the cusp of getting things figured out. I think Pryce and Cooper's development over the season is key for this team to get back to the NCAA but they look more than capable last night.

Saydore didn't play I guess he's hurt. I didn't watch but sounds like he was missed. Dembele doesn't bring much to the table. If he's not rebounding then I say take him out. He doesn't do much of anything at the offensive end anyway. See what Tadjo and Saydore can bring when he's back.

Is that an AAU team?

I kind of asked that to myself, is Commerce like a business part of Dallas or Houston? So, what did I do? I google it!

Turns out Commerce is a town of 9000 in NE Texas.

Do they have a football team? Yes, they do, and it plays in FCS in the Southland conference. They are 1-8 and in next to last place. Next thing you know they'll be showing up in Kinnick............

It sounded like Thelwell played much better than Harding, in control vs out of control Harding even put up an air ball 3. The Hawks were really clicking on O when Thelwell was in there. He's earning his minutes.

Cooper Koch got good minutes and seemed to be doing good things in his overall game.

Pryce Sandfort played well. He clearly has the green light on 3s. He seems to have a good all around game.

With Traore being out, and Dembele having 2 early fouls, the first half was just kind of a clunky. Fran had to go to Brauns earlier than I would expect he wanted to, same with having to bring in Kingsbury, which I felt was more of a case of "We're short a guy, and this is our opener, so everyone is going to get to play". I wouldn't sail the ship on Dembele after 1 game, but Iowa is going to need someone to be a strong 4 next to Freeman.

I was pretty encouraged by what I saw last night.

I didn’t watch the game so I am going off the box score. Freeman needs to stay on the court. He can’t have the foul trouble issues that he did last year. Payton Sandfort led the team in rebounds with 11. It is early, but it looks like he will have to do some heavy lifting on the boards AGAIN this year. He can play the 2,3 or 4 spot…I would rather have him just hunting shots and getting buckets, but it looks like he will have to do some board work.

That was one of key disappointments when went to exhibition ...
Fran rode Harding way too long when he was not playing well at all. Wanted to (and should've) seen a lot more of Thelwell.

So far, Harding looks stuck - like he's back in his early freshman year - little to no progression in his game given the importance of his role. He also has to work harder because he's just so small / plays so small.

I do believe he'll come around but it's gotta happen more quickly. In meantime, I can easily see Thelwell moving past him based on consistency, maturity and productivity.

Are we sure Harding isn’t a role player, coming off the bench, getting 12 minutes a game?

This is not withoutprecedent. West texas State in San Marcos is now Texas St, 30,000 students strong.

Which is why Texas St is now a serious candidate to join the newly reborn Pac conference. I think there is an official requirement that all football schools in the new Pac must have a name that ends with "state". The other 7 football schools are:

Wash St, Ore St, Boise St, Col St, Fresno St, San Diego St, and Utah St.

New Mex St also qualifies as a candidate.
