Terrible recruiting

There isn’t one player on the roster who can create their own shot . This roster is loaded with players who can only score two feet from the basket and that’s when they are wide open . This is the slowest footed Iowa team I have ever watched and that includes dick biter teams

Where is the help at guard? Lack of good guards, outside of Bohannon, will continue to kill Iowa this year, and years following. I agree that their front court guys are not good at creating their own shots, they rely on someone getting them the ball in good scoring positions; however, they don't have the guards that are able to deliver the ball to those positions. It will be a struggle this year until they figure out a way to work around this problem.

I cannot fathom how Fran can seemingly recruit at every other position except point guard. I guess he did land Gesell when he first came in, but total whiffs and misses since.

How can you not convince a kid to come be the man at PG with abundant playing time available in a fun offense (when it's working) with shooters? It just amazes me. It's like Fran is allergic to true PG's. Unreal.

Jordan is a good PG. He was last night. He does has defensive deficiencies, but I think he's done better so far this season. There are many issues, but Jordan is the easiest scapegoat.

PG matchup:
Iowa: 12 Pts / 3 A / 2 TOs / 4-12 FG
VT: 4 pts / 6 A / 3 TOs / 2-8 FG

Next three off guards:
Iowa: 6 Pts / 1 A / 6 TOs
VT: 37 Pts / 5 A / 3 TOs

In no way am I blaming this year's struggles and disappointment on Jordan at all. This is 100% on Fran. Jordan has done a commendable job really. I really like him, but I feel like he's being put in a tough spot and playing out of his true position. He should be playing at the 2, and giving spot minutes at the 1 ideally.

Agree. Jordan does alright at 1, but I feel he and the team would be better off if he were playing at 2.

Don't think anyone is blaming him. At this level, he's a Labrador trying to play the role of a border collie. His helpers are St Bernard's and boxers trying to play pit bulls and great danes. All the breeds are usable but the others are needed.

If switched to the 2 he would get scorched by the average 6’3 shooting guard
That's the conundrum. He has the game of a two, and the length of a one, so it's pick your poison with Jordan. Fran does have a soft spot for tweeners.

Ideally, we would have a true PG with the requisite athleticism, and use Bohannon more as a long-range scoring specialist off the bench, who can also play some minutes at the point.

Pressing with this team is pointless. They aren't producing turnovers and it's just leading to easy run outs by the opposing team. Packing it in a zone and using their height is this teams only hope. If you want to be a running team you gotta recruit fluid athletes.

I'm pinning my hopes on Connor to take over the point. But then that's not realistic since he's a freshman not known for his foot speed coming off a case of mono. But that's all we got right now.

I loved the press with Aaron White, mostly because he was hyper aggressive and went after steals and used his length to his advantage. Right now the press isn't doing shit because everyone is being scared and timid of making a mistake.

As far as recruiting, I had to laugh (cry) watching Miami beat the Gophers last night. Miami played 3 guards the entire game, sometimes 4. They didn't care that the Gophers were blocking some shots, they just kept attacking, shooting over them, scoring around them, and even driving into them.

College basketball is truly a guards game...lucky for us Iowa has 15 power forwards.

15 forwards and a 6'0 white guy as our only guard. I love JoBo, but he's they kind of player you love to come off the bench and hit some 3's, not run your team's offense. He does fine in that role, but we need a TON of help at guard.

Not to thoroughly depress anyone but I was going back and looking at previous season's rosters, to see when the last time we had guards this poor. Anyway, I came across the '06/07 roster. Alfraud's last season 17-14. His guards?
Adam Haluska SR
Tony Freeman SO
Justin Johnson JR
Mike Henderson SR
We could sure use one or two of those guys on this roster. Throw in Tyler Smith. I'd take him at the 3 in a NY minute. Alfraud had no bigs on that roster. A young Cyrus Tate. Seth Gourney and Curt Looby.

Our best players are freshmen and sophomores. And we have no seniors to provide leadership. We will outscore some teams. And the defense will improve as the season progresses. We lose 1 player that doesn't play and add 2 players...one being a likely star next year.
