TD Drop Was The Ballgame

They pretty much did. Credit our defense but MSU coaching was horrible and the pick in the endzone was a gift. If tables were turned we would feel that way for sure.
See September 22, 2018, when the tables were turned. Christmas came early for Wisconsin that night.

And we did say we gifted the game to them, which we did, as did MSU today.

It was nice to silence those cowbells, however.

1) Thanx for ur honest presentation of that play. Gervase was beaten - badly- and the guy just dropped it into his hands. It was nice the Hawks benefitted from a lucky bounce.

2) I really like Iowa D. If tall Nelson and Hooker stay + the young DBs come along as expected. Hammer time!

3) Winning every game is fun. Especially those you should and few u shouldn’t. That this was the latter AND the last game is sweet.

4) None of the above erases the fact that Nate Stanley and Brian Ferentz are bad at their jobs and as much liabilities as contributors.
Couldn't agree more. Gervase was beaten badly a few times today, dropped 2 passes that should have been intercepted, and just lucked out after being burnt badly on the TD pass. The receiver catches that, and game over. No way we were driving the length of the field. We were outclassed athletically, but they erased that advantage by playing stupid. Yes Nate Stanley and Brian Ferentz are both awful, and we'll continue to be mediocre next year, well probably worse since Fant is gone, and probably Hock as well. -15 yards rushing? Just sad. Nate's stats were padded with completions of 2 yard passes all day.

And Gervase was Johnny on the spot. Two things I'd like to point out
  • Our physicality = their speed. It had a noticable effect as the game went on. Receivers arms were shrinking, running backs were getting knocked out of the game, it had a cumulative effect. They had to rely on Fitzgerald way too much.
  • I'm a progressive enough person to recognize the need for a playoff system. But there is still something romantic about finishing your season, and the careers of seniors, with a win. Bowl games offer one of the few opportunities in sports to do so.
Great day to be a Hawkeye

The Gervasce interview immediately after the game said a lot.

It's almost always a game of inches and 2-3 critical plays.
That MSU receiver likely catches that TD pass 19 out of 20 times.
This game is yet further proof why I never, ever, ever bet on NCAA football.

GO HAWKS

I’m sorry man, I know you would be happier if we lost. Tough day for you.

Looks like the ball was tipped by Iowa's defensive back which threw off the timing, not just a drop.

MS St of course will claim they gave the game to Iowa.
In the press conference, MS coach kept mentioning the penalties, said they were not why MS lost, but then continued to talk about them. In my opinion, the zebras missed a lot of crack-back blocks, holds, and helmet to helmet calls on MS. I saw Iowa make a couple of defensive holds while blocking which could have been called but all the calls on MS were legit.

The defense was keying on him, this is not on Hock or the offense.

Yeah, TJH is a great TE and will be successful in the NFL but his stats this season were aided by having Fant at the other TE. He didn’t have that today (oh, and that was the #1 D in the nation having given up 5 passing TDs...until today)

When the MSU coach looks at the film, he'll go "ohhh, right" and then shut up about the penalties. They were all so legit, it would have been a travesty to have ignored them.

Holding on the pass completion down to the goal line was the killer (for them). That was likely seven points wiped away. But is was a hold.

Here's another key play. Who was our defensive back that tripped up their receiver at the one yard line. It was the drive before Gervase's pick and MSU ended up settling for three points instead of seven.

Speaking of Gervase, he had a legit excuse for not getting an earlier int. Stone tipped the ball and shielded Jake's vision.

One more point. Nick Niemann has arrived. Huge game today, Gholston too.

So you would recommend betting on NFL football as a more legitimate retirement option?

I was about 95% sure that their RB fumbled and we recovered on the play before Gervase's int when he collapsed after he went off of the field. But nothing was said about it. The replay looked like it was a clear fumble.

Their receivers coach should be fired in the locker room and make him find his own way home. They had the worst wideouts I've ever seen a power 5 team field

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Yes, the ball was tipped - not by much, but often times the slide shift in rotation or whatever is enough to un-nerve a receiver. There is no doubt that was the key to the interception.
