Tall Receiving Targets for Vandenberg

A pretty funky contrast ....

Stanzi's top targets in 2010:
McNutt = 6-4
DJK = 6-1 (presumably, with shoes on)
Sandeman = 6-1 (presumably, with shoes on)
Davis = 6-3
Chaney Jr = 5-9
Reisner = 6-3
Herman = 6-5

Vandenberg's top targets in 2011:
McNutt = 6-4
Davis = 6-3
K-Mart = 6-0 (the lone "shorty")
Shumpert = 6-3
Haluska = 6-4
Herman = 6-5
Fiedorowicz = 6-7

Homer, where do you think McNutt gets drafted next year? He supposedly has 4.5 speed ad close to a 40" vertical. Do you think he could sneak into the 1st round? Unless he has a bad combine I can't seem him falling past the 2nd round. Alshon Jefferey, Michael Floyd, Justin Blackmon and Ryan Broyles are probably the top prospects for next year at this time but McNutt has some serious talent.

Height is nice, but like basketball isn't much without talent. DJK was the all time leading receiver in Iowa history he drew the best coverage each and every week and produced. As far as McNutt being a first or second round pick slim slim slim shot. If he has a great year be like a 4th round guy.

Cotton is right at 6-1 and possibly the fastest of the group...

If he's really got 4.5 speed, then 2nd round is very possible. The NFL doesn't look as closely at stats as we do. They'll see a big, fast receiver with good hands, who is a willing blocker downfield. The biggest thing I want to see McNutt improve on is route-running. Not that he's been bad at it, but that was DJK's biggest strength, IMO. And if he can be more polished in that regard, he's almost definitely a Day 1 pick, IMO.

If McNutt can improve his consistency, his upside will likely make NFL-folks consider him as a "safe" 2nd rounder. Of course, I'm assuming that he'd "test" well.

However, if he doesn't improve his consistency ... then it's not as clear where he'd go.

What do you mean by "consistency"? McNutt rarely drops a ball. Pass patterns? blocking? I don't follow.

Slim? I think you are sadly mistaken (my $0.02).

McNutt has the height, he has the speed, he can jump, he has hands the size of dish plates, catches everything away from his body, goes over the middle to make catches, and basically is an excellent overall athlete. He looks to me to be a Chris Carter (former O$U, Phil. Eagle, Minn. Viking) clone ... without the personal issues. I believe the sky is the limit for this guy! What trait listed here do you not see?

If he has a better than average senior season he will go very high in the draft. Granted, much of that is dependent on our new QB performance during games. But he will be our QB's primary target. He won't be the first receiver taken in the draft, but he won't be far behind either.

Oh boy here go again I'm nut saying that McNutt is not great I love McNutt, but you write down the WR's this year that go in the first two rounds they are game changers. McNutt route running is questionable, but most importantly how does he do against #1 corners beating jams and getting off the ball plus improve is route running.

Little easier last year when your the #2 maybe #3 guy for defenses to stop. If he has a good year will be 4th rounder. I actually think Davis will be Iowa's best WR this year.

I don't care how tall they are. All I want to know is 1) can they get open?, and 2) can they catch?

I'd agree that he had some challenges with being jammed and running routes... not to say to he couldn't correct that, with this technically being 3rd year as a WR, he could make significant strides going into next year. Routes and being jammed can be coached out of player. The other intangibles (physical attributes) will have the NFL salivating over him if he keeps improving... so we'll see what he can do to improve his stock.
