Talent gap

I already knew it was large, but reading this article on ESPN just makes me even more sad.

What do you expect. Alabama is in a recruiting hotbed down south, they are the most heralded program of the last 60 years, they have a cutthroat coach with a killer instinct (which is different than coaches who just hate to lose).

Even at that Alabama went through a really bad stretch not too many years ago which puts our last 2.5 years in perspective.

And it's only getting easier for Saban to get talent. Three of Four championships plus NFL draft-picks pouring out of that program. He's got a dynasty going at Alabama right now and will probably win some more championships before he's done there.

Alabama football = Kentucky basketball ... Simply a feeding system to the next level... And why would it make you "sad?"

No, it doesn't. Don Shula and Mike DuBose should not be the standard we compare Ferentz to.

Ferentz wouldn't make it 5 years at a place like Alabama if he put out results like he has here. Saban took over after that rough stretch. He won the SEC West in Year 2 and a national title in Year 3. And you know the rest. 5 years, 3 division titles, 3 national titles.

You also perfectly nutshelled the difference between Ferentz and Saban on a philosophical level. Ferentz hates to lose. Saban goes for the jugular and dominates you. Now, what program on the Iowa campus has long had that mentality? Oh, that's right. The one with 23 national championships in 37 years.

To me the sad part is that Cyrus K. is a no name at Bama, though he is starting LT, but at Iowa he'd be the biggest thing ever. Kids have short memories and before Saban got there they probably knew little of Bama's success. yes it has many advantages, but so do many other schools over Iowa that don't have bama's success.

UI & TM; you both make a great point about having the killer instinct vs hating to lose. Our wrestling program is a perfect example of how it can be done. KF needs to stop being a nice guy and do what he is paid to do; win games for the University AND the fans, at all (legal & moral) costs. Sometimes it seems there is a need to be a revered member of the "Good Ol' boys network" and that comes across as self-serving.

Here is the deal, you want Iowa to compete, well the the donors need to fund it. OK4P will tell you for every law or rule there are 5 ways around it.
You first have to start with a stellar walk on program, much like Nebby did. Find a way to make the Walk on program easier on kids and you are on your way.
Iowa just likes to do it by the book, and nobody else is playing by that book, so how do you compete? We only have so many ships to give, but walk ons like Mark W are out there. Go find them and make it easy for them to get to Iowa.

He knows that and leaves it out. The guy is a ferentz homer.

Haha, you are so funny. I didnt lock KF into a contract through 2020. I think KF earns too much but it is private funds, which I donate to, so I dont make a big deal about his salary. KF runs a good ship but I wish he would try to win big, smash the opponent, and go for the kill on game day.

If our offense is extremely poor next year then somebody needs to go.

There is no doubt the talent gap in 2013 will be less than it was in 2012. We return too many people to think otherwise...in addition to adding some personnel with promise. There are way more options at WR this year, although unproven, at least it looks like you have some quickness to find gaps in the short passing game. Canzeri, in my opinion ends up in the slot some this year too. If Scherff and Donnal come back at the same level they were playing, or better with the experience they gained, this offensive line is going to be nasty...big and nasty. Then it comes down to a QB who can make the right read, and throw accurately. It would also be a huge plus if he can make something happen under pressure...that didn't happen often last year. Despite everyone pointing at Beathard and Sokol as the guys, I think Rudock is the guy.

We had the 7th ranked defense in total points per game in the Big 10 last year that returns 8 starters. There are several guys also in what I would call their step up or get passed up year (spears, mcminn, etc). We have CB depth and although replacing Hyde will be tough, the other three spots are pretty solid in the secondary. Once again, this year comes down to the DL. There is no reason to feel they won't be significantly better. LTP and Cooper will improve greatly. Alvis will be better and healthier. Do any of the RS freshmen step up? I still think there is a JC player on the DL somewhere out there for this staff who can contribute next year. I have to think this is a priority still for this coaching staff.

I think the negativity of the way the year ended is clouding people's outlook on 2013. 15 returning starters and several others that got experience...and we are still young and have the ability to improve by large margins. If Scherff and Donnal are healthy...and with the TE's we have, our running game will be formidable. That makes the passing game that much better. I think it shapes up to be a very interesting year in 2013...and one with hope...not dread.
