Take Nielson out in the 2 minute drill....

It was obvious that the opposing QB was targeting whoever this player is lining up to cover. At what point do you switch up coverage, or just flat out PULL HIM! My god it makes me want to puke, This is how Binns got his pick in the desert. Since you havent pressured the QB all game with 4 rush, try to rush only 3 and pull a DL back into coverage to confuse and switch it up. Doing the same thing over and over without results is the definition of insanity in football. On the lighter side of the night, we did force three 3rd downs, and two 4th downs on the final drive, but you guessed it the aforementioned player had two pivotal plays (one on 3rd down, and one on the 4th & 4)

Somewhat along the same lines...but from a different thread:

Another thing I noticed today with regard to how Wisconsin outcoached our staff...

How many times has Wisconsin gone 5 wide this year, Tolzien by himself in the gun? I have seen a few of their games, and they don't do that too much. But I swear they must have done it 10-12 times today...and they converted on about 75-80% of them (or so it seemed). They kept abusing the fact we left our base package on the field...it also looked like we picked a bad day to play more man coverage than usual.

I second it!

Our LB play is really hurting us. We just don't have the speed to run to the ball. I don't see why we shouldn't put Morris in there more often. Of course, Tarpinian would make a big difference.

If we play Nickel a linebacker will still be matched up with the inside slot or running back in five wide. It is a tough match up. Sometimes the other team executes. Nielsen played fine. Edds gave up first downs last season. Angerer gave up first downs. Some of you guys have incredibly short memories. Nielsen has been a bright spot. If we are going to replace a LB on cover it should be Hunter.

I agree with most of your post 'cept what I put into bold....

We have had to put a nickel package into action before, today proves what needs to happen to beat us that two other teams (@Indiana & @NW) can achieve. We have run Nickel in the past, why not have it for emergency situations? It was obvious that they were "picking" on him. In that situation you have to switch it up somehow, again an alteration in coverage is what yielded the Binns pick, at the very least delay blitz Nielson if you want him on the field for whatever reason, just do not line him adjacent to someone in the slot position.

P.S. Did anyone else see DiBona in on the last Wisky score? #37 got in their, that is how deep we went in the LB department.

What I wanted to know was why we stuck any of the LB's in man coverage so many times, especially out of empty sets with no run threat.

I don't think you are catching what I am saying. Nielsen is probably our second best cover LB. Tarp is the best Johnson is #3. If we play Nickel Nielsen is still going to be matched with a RB or slot receiver. It is a mismatch- Greenway couldn't consistently cover it and Edds was good last season but he had first downs completed on him.

We have to have more pressure. Ballard, Binns, Klug and Daniels need to step up against better competition. The pass rush is at least as much to blame as the coverage.

Another way to put this is I completely disagree with your OP.

Fair Enough, again if you do something repeatedly yet it doesn't yield the result you are looking for, then by definition that is insanity for both our coverage and in QB pressure. If you knew you hadn't sniffed a QB sack all day then why do you not one blitz on that last drive (not even a run blitz with sash or backside CB??) come on that's kinda silly.
