T/F: We haven't had a real leader in this program since Matt Roth

True or False? Discuss.

I say true. Not one person has had the take no prisoner attitude combined with the total and complete desire to break the will of his opponent more than Roth. His attitude was totally contagious for that entire team and most of all the defense.

That guy was pretty awesome.
 
Mitch King, Pat Angerer. ESPECIALLY King. Tate had a similar attitude, but was a little too hard on his teammates to be a true leader.
 
Angerer might be a good bet actually... King never was part of enough on the field success ... as great as he may have been he was here 2005-2008... those were some dark ages my friend.

That's hardly an indictment on his leadership ability. He was an outstanding leader, and the 2007 roster wasn't exactly loaded with talent. Prior to that, he was an underclassman. Roth wasn't a leader until his junior year, because that's usually how it works.

I'd be willing to say that Rob Bruggeman may have been the best leader this team has had in the last 10 years.

It makes you wonder a bit just how much of a difference he might have made on the 2007 squad. He may well have been the best center under Ferentz (only Nelson is right up there with him), definitely played with a mean streak.
 
That's what I loved, and the C is the guy who makes the Offense go. He calls out schemes and defenses and to do that with such an attitude is awesome. When your center is a badass, it rubs off on everyone.

I wish he could have played longer.
 
The thing about Roth...I think it would have taken a tranquilizer gun and a taser to get him off the field when it's 3rd and 6 in the 4th quarter. "Two words; Iowa Hawkeye Pride".

This is what I want back to Iowa Football. you would have suspected rabies at the foam coming from this guys mouth. I do not think your leader does this, but you definitely miss this type of fire:

How vocal was Klink? I really don't remember. Albert Young certainly wasn't overly vocal, but one helluva "lead by example" guy. He deserved much better on his Senior Day than what he got.
 
But Roth created an identity. The bullies of the Big 10 was because of him.

And he was successful on the field and led extremely successful defenses.

I think we saw this year that as far as the offense and defense goes, the tail still wags the dog.
 
Completely disagree- Pat Angerer was without a doubt as much a leader on the field as Roth. He did crazy things and said crazy things that took pressure off those around him.
I would also like to say Mitch King as well. There were times he not only got on his teammates, but he also had moments- in the biggest spots- where he was quite simply unblockable. Those two jump right out at me, but there are others.
