System?

The term "system" is overused. In college bball you either have athletes or you dont. When you have athletes you can run any system you want. Look at Rick Barnes and Texas, the guy cant coach his way out of a paper bag but has success because he has good players. It isnt rocket science

While I would agree Iowa has chucked way too many threes this season in general, I think the are getting better looks as the season has progressed, mainly because of the inside out game they have established. Now, that has been inconsistent as well and somehting they need to do with regularity. I know that Iowa's three point shot attempts were very low in the OSU game so that is a good start in the first half and they were right in the game on the road. They ended up 8-20 and several of those were late in the shot clock, still 40%. That is one of the things I wish they would do differently is get their shots of earlier in the shot clock. Not sure if this is execution or coaching. I honestly can't say, but I am sure some of you can and will because I counted a least three Lick anti-supporters already representing.

I don't know that we have a full idea of what Lickliter's system is, basing it solely off of his Iowa teams. He has not had the right parts in the right spots on the floor, together at the same time.

I recall watching his last Butler team play. I probably saw 10 of their games that year. They were a joy to watch.

The problem isn't "jacking up too many threes" the problem is "not making them"...the entire point of ANY "system" is to get an open shot and Iowa hasn't made a good percentage of shots no matter how open they are, beyond OR inside the arc.

As for, "Look at all of the Lick supporters stick their head in the sand on this one." Maybe they're just tired of the same arguments every...single...day? Not sure how many times the exact same people on one side of the fence want to beat their heads against the wall vs the exact same people on the other side...I do know one thing, those who like to b!tch and complain will never get tired of doing so before the supporters/kool-aid drinkers...that's been proven on the basketball AND football boards, time and time again.

Jon,

His Butler team in 2007 went to the sweet 16. But at Butler he didn't really play anyone.

At Iowa, his teams face top talent night in and night out. The system works well against Mid-Major talent. Against the B10? It just doesn't work.

GUARANTEE someone is going to tell you the teams Butler beat in the tourney that year and the fact Butler gave Florida their toughest game.

Watch. It will be one of the 3 posters as well.

Wait. I all ready said it. they do not read everyones posts though, so it will probably be said still.

That team beat Maryland in the NCAA tournament, and played eventual national champion Florida to an 8 point game. I'd say his style of play can work against premeir talent.

I don't think it's as much of a problem with the "system" as it is with the players playing in the "system". Talent makes coaches either look really good or really bad. Right now, Iowa is just lacking talent and a real difference maker on the floor.

Iowa has some decent players...just not enough of them or any game changers.

Hopefully some of the players like Payne and May can sit down with Lick...... and Lick can watch Thad Matta's teams play....... and the Hawks can come to the conclusion they need to ax this SYSTEM talk and play basketball.

Create mismatches, get in space, let athletes play the game.

That would be the biggest step in Lickliter turning into a big time coach IMO.

Hahahahahaha.

See what just happened up there.

read my 1st post in the thread.

read the next post at the same time.

It is so predictable.

Hahahahaha.

Come on. It was funny. I don't care who ya are, that was funny.

What the F does this even mean. Either something works or it doesn period. Navy runs the triple frickin option. It's been around since 1950 and it works. It works agains bad teams like the other military academies, and it works against Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Missouri. When they don't win its because the other team had better players not because the "system" failed.

The argument that it wont work in the B10 because the other teams are better it assenine. Yes the B10 is stronger, but it's not stronger because of better "systems", its better because the players are better. Now that he's at Iowa he has access to players that he didn't at Butler. He's either going to get those players and suceed, or he's not and he will fail. Regardless of what happens the result will be based on the quality of players he brings in not a damn system.

If anything the his style should be an asset here. It was designed to allow Butler to play with teams that have more depth and are more talented athletically. Outside of a couple of Olsen and Raveling classes Iowa has never had an overly athletic or individually talented team. If it worked for Butler in that situation it should work for us as well.

The only people I know of that talk about the "system" are people that rail on the team. If it weren't for all the "this system sucks" posts we wouldnt see the word system a half dozen times throughout the season.

It is what it is. Those who are holding out hope that something different than what we have been seeing is going to evolve are wasting their time. This is the system. The question is(as I believe Shane stated), will we start hitting open shots to open up other options.

But alas, this is the boring style we are stuck with. Come to grips with it or prepare for disappointment.
