NCAA denies Connecticut Huskies' request for APR waiver for 2013 postseason - ESPN
Sorry, I really blew this...Title should read UConn might not get into 2013 Tournament
Interesting article about UConn not making the necessary score to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
The president and coaches, of course, are crying about how unfair it all is. Their self-proposed sanctions are garbage...do away with four cupcake games and a tournament, while still going to the Virgin Islands Tournament (a good recruiting tool). Go into the inner city and give lectures on academic achievement? Perhaps they SHOULD be doing this anyway?
UConn like all colleges have known about this new rule for about 3 years. If the president and Calhoun are so upset perhaps the president should have interferred with and made Calhoun begin athletes with higher academic standards 3 years ago?
Not getting into the tournament regardless of how your season goes could hurt a program's recruiting for a year. THAT is what Calhoun is worried about. How does he go into prospective kid's homes and tell the parents, "unfortunately this year we can't go to the tournament because UConn did not meet the minimum NCAA academic standards, but we can ensure you that UConn is deeply committed to your son's education."
How did some of these players even get into college and what are doing there? They are unable to meet a 2.3 GPA. That simply tells me two things, they cannot do the work period or they simply are not even trying to do the work. Where was the oversight by the coaching staff when these players were failing?
But I suppose in the end, the NCAA will cave in to UConn simply because of who UConn is in the world of colelge BB these days and allow UConn to set their own penalties. It will be great though if the NCAA finally shows some cajones and enforces the rule they passed!
