Stupid Coaching Moves - And They Escape

PJ Fleck called his last timeout on a two point conversion when he's already down 4 and has to score a touchdown anyway to win. How does anyone think this moron is an up and coming coach?

Mark Dantonio calls consecutive timeouts on defense with a minute left when ASU has a fourth and ten deep in Spartan territory. Consecutive timeouts before the 4th down play. ASU scores and they have no timeouts.

In both instances...the coaching blunders get bailed out due to players making the necessary plays. That doesn't make them any less stupid.

Sparky lost, in part because of the lack of a timeout to take another play before kicking!

That's too funny...i only watched until I saw the first field goal go through. Poetic justice for Dantonio. The capper is that ASU committed an obvious foul on the second kick...the guy jumped over the center and he wasn't on the line of scrimmage and clearly touched the MSU center. That's a 15 yard penalty.

Dantonio is just a douche. He's going to be whining like a 2 year old for the next week.

I think you mean all season, and probably beyond that. What a baby.

Let me add something. Kirk Ferentz for the second week in a row messed up the clock at the end of the half. You call your first timeout with 54 seconds left instead going into a huddle and waiting 25 seconds to run the play that got the first down. Unless you didn't want ISU to substitute...well...that was really stupid. I don't think that was the case though.

This should help him feel better ... :)

IMO KF's clock errors are the biggest blunders of all of them. Kids who play Pop Warner football and Madden have basic clock management skills.

Some of those other incidents could at least be chalked up to heat of the moment type things. Or they are errors that the coaches recognize and are not repeated.

Kirk's clock management stuff has been going on for 2 decades and he still hasn't recognized there is an issue.

Was he even asked about it in the postgame? My God, if he was an NFL coach the media would be killing him right now, win or lose.

Missed? Hahaha missed on purpose! I think it was Wisconsin got screwed over playing ASU before. The BIG needs to stop scheduling games with them. On the other hand I'm sure not heartbroken over MSU getting screwed.

Says, the officials "will be held accountable". In other words, league will probably give them an under-the-table bonus.

I swear, the one and only way to fix this shit is through the following:
--Host B1G team shall withhold visitor gate receipts/guarantees
--Not pay the officials
--Prohibit any further B1G vs. Pac 12 games during regular season

The B1G gets this kind of crap on a yearly basis. It totally sucks.

But...I LOVE seeing D'Antonio have to whine "quietly"!

The worst clock management was throwing a pass to your TE running a quick out to the short side of the field. I didn't have a problem with the play call, but my sweet baby Jesus, run it to the wide side so he doesn't end up out of bounds and stop the clock. [facepalm]

Between this and the embarrassing clock management at the end of the half..AGAIN... I scratch my head. How can you live/eat/breathe football for years...and make such simple, fundamental mistakes...AGAIN AND AGAIN?!

My question is...I see all these guys with headsets on. O'Keefe, WR Coach, RB coach, Phil Parker...why can't someone say on the damn headset...let's get a timeout here...and save some clock. My guess is that when the offense is in this situation...it's silence from the position coaches. This would leave KF and BF to make that decision and I'm sure that's the way they want it.

They haven't done very well...it may be time to delegate that to a position coach... and the position coach says "coaching book is to take a timeout here guys"...or "I recommend a timeout." Or "hey, get your head out of your ass...I know you have timeouts, but if you don't have seconds on the clock...the timeouts are freaking worthless."

I'm going with the latter. I'm afraid KF and BF think you can still use your timeouts with the clock at 0:00.

I'm going to add another stupid coaching move. I think Iowa State was up 14-9 and get have a 4th and 3 at the Iowa 33 yard line. Iowa State then false starts and Campbell elects to punt...FROM the IOWA 38. You have the momentum and a chance to put a dagger in Iowa...you are well in plus territory and you punt. Something tells me his balls were starting to get sucked up in his sack at that point.

Iowa State then proceeds to punt the ball into the end zone for a 13 yard net transfer of the ball to Iowa.

Stupid coaching move.

We were all scratching our heads at our party.
This more than anything drives me nuts from most coaches. Be aggressive and play to win.

This has frustrated me for years. KF sucked at this the first time KOK was here. Shouldn't KOK be smart enough to figure this out? Is KF such a control freak he doesn't want ANY input in this area or during those moments? Just boggles the mind.

It's very simple. Even if we aren't in a 2-minute drill when the clock gets under 2 minutes and we have the ball someone needs to yell "Red Alert" or something. Or confiscate his notebook or gum to snap him out of his trance.

He has been a head coach for almost 25 years.
I have said it before, my theory is he sucks at this because is an O-line coach. This blindspot is a function of being an O-line coach and not having to use that skill. It will NEVER improve. It would be like trying to teach him Swahili now.

I think the ISU end of half was kinda bad but not really bad. When it's 3rd and throwing distance, an incomplete pass ends your possession and stops the clock. It puts you in a tough decision where you need to factor in how much time you leave for the other team. The clock management a few weeks ago was beyond horrible tho.

All paying fans should have buttons on their seats...with a time out button...when 80% of fans agree that a timeout is needed...have it broadcoast on the big screens...CALL TIMEOUT COACH
