Strike another potential in-state target

According to Rivals, Cedar Falls athlete James Harrington has decided to focus on track in college.

He had football offers from Kansas State and several smaller FBS and FCS schools.

I think he had some mid-major basketball offers as well.

I don't follow recruiting but I assume that he either

a: Knows he's not an elite football player and has no desire to try to play the game.

b: Is a fast guy who a few desperate coaches threw a bone at hoping for the best not knowing if he could ever play or not.

Unless he's the next Carl Lewis he'd be stupid to throw a successful football career down the toilet for track.

Good luck to him.

This kid is a great track athlete. His high school times already put him at the level where he can score at the Big Ten championships (21.16 in the 200 as a high school junior), and he completely dominated the state meet. I'm glad to see he is going to his best sport and focusing on it.

Really not a big surprise as he has always excelled at track. His speed creates interest for football but apparently he likes track best. Hopefully he goes to Iowa ton continue his career in that sport.

He had some sick numbers as a receiver last year. Something along the lines of 50 catches for about 900 yards and double digit TDs. Keep in mind, this is against some outstanding competition in arguably the best football league in the state.

He definitely has the skills to be a great football player. Of course, if his heart isn't into it and he lacks the requisite toughness or just doesn't want to make the total commitment necessary to play football, then he has obviously made the right choice.

Who knows what he will do at a highly rated track school with the proper coaches? Maybe he thinks he has a chance at the Olympic team with the right training? Maybe he KNEW he could participate immediately in track and didn't know when or if he would participate in football. I doubt he is throwing anything away plus he will in all likelihood get a sound education in perhaps a major he really wants and still participate in track.

He's not obligated to play football just because he's good at football.

I see nothing wrong with his choice, if that what makes him happy.
