STORY: What Might Interest Iowa in Transfer Portal

With Iowa's success developing the TE position and getting players at that position a chance in the NFL, one would think they could have the pick of the litter in the portal for that position if needed grabbing highly rated players. Iowa should never struggle recruiting or filling the TE position.

What I would like to see Iowa go after in the transfer portal: QB
What they will go after instead: Punter

Iowa needs to find a GT kicker.

We've been spoiled the last 6 years with Koehn, Recinos, and Duncan.

It might seem inconsequential, but those three guys all won us games with their legs at times, and in college football one loss can make your season go from NY6 to playing Upper Southern NW Kalamazoo Region Welding School (Parkview Mall Campus) in the Ron's Garden Center Bowl presented by the Moline Jaycees.

You blue hairs out there like @ClintonIAfan might be ok with going to a bowl game that has a track around the field and sells $1.50 walking tacos, but it's not a good look for recruits.

One more vicious attack on blue hairs, and I will ban you!

RB= that kid from NW is available, but IMHO he's looking to start, not play behind Goodson.

I guess he was down to 3rd or 4th string by the end of the season, he might not even be ahead of the Williamses. The NW DE is kind of interesting, though...

In 5-star TE news, this LSU TE is in the transfer portal:

As a true freshman, he had 35 rec for 368 and 2 TDs. He would have 4 years of eligibility left. Probably an extreme-longshot, but we certainly do have something to offer TEs.

Only issue with that is that we would be looking for another kicker same time next year.

Who was before Koehn? Mike Meyer?

With a position like kicker I’m ok with going shopping every year (if staff doesn’t see anyone on the roster who’s a standout). Not saying we shouldn’t recruit kickers because that’d be pretty dumb, but chances are if a kicker wasn’t pretty damn good he wouldn’t bother entering the portal.

The art itself of figuring out which kickers can stand up to game pressure has led to some fascinating stories.

Our special teams coach in 1984 wouldn't even consider Rob Houghtlin as a walk on, so Rob entered an intramural kicking contest at Kinnick. Hayden was watching. Rob walked on, earned a scholarship, then got the job. Hayden discovered the man who would win several big games and produce one of the two most dramatic moments of the Fry/Ferentz era by watching him kick against a bunch of boobs who probably lived down the hall in the dorms.

John Madden used to have the entire team stand and watch the last kick of practice in training camp. If he made it, the team didn't have to run gassers. College basketball coaches have done similar pressure simulations by putting a freshman on the free throw line at the end of practice to determine whether or not the team had to run gassers.
