Stock report: Bye Week

Well we’ve seen three games and starting to get a feel for this team. Let’s take a look at where we are at compared to expectations.

Offense: Stock up (see below)

Quarterback: Stock up slightly. The biggest thing for me is Nate is using his feet to pick up first downs.

Runningback: Stock up. Sargent looks good and is running hard. IKM has made some plays and Goodson continues to get touches as a potential game-breaker.

Wide Receiver: Stock way up. We knew there was some potential here, but these guys have really performed at a high level. 4 or 5 legitimate options here.

Tight end: Stock down. We knew a dropoff was coming, but these guys really haven’t been involved much at all.

Offensive line: Stock up. Had some injuries and this group has still really played well. Running the ball and have protected Nate.

Defense: Stock down slightly. I know someone will say we aren’t allowing a ton of points, but right now that actually might be because our offense is helping our defense when in years past it was the complete opposite. Iowa is 9th in the country right now in time of possession. Iowa’s defense is allowing 5 yards a play, which is a mediocre #51 in the country. I still believe the potential is there for improved play, especially when healthy.

Defensive line: Stock down. Just haven’t been able to generate a consistent pass rush with 4 guys like we could last year. I expected more than I’ve seen thus far. Run stopping has been good.

Linebackers: Stock even. Playing pretty much as expected here.

Defensive backs: Stock down slightly. Injuries have hurt this group obviously.

Special teams: Stock up. Punting and kicking have been very good.

Coching: Stock even. Some bad clock management but ultimately we are 3-0.

I’d say stock is up on the linebackers. They are awfully good. Otherwise, as things currently stand, I agree with you. I believe that if the defense can get healthy the next two weeks, we will be a lot happier with both the DBs and DL.

Agree with most, but I'd say:

RB's even / as expected. Good- solid, well-rounded overall as a group. Bad- Goodson maybe the only chance at a breakaway threat.

WR's up. "knew there was some potential" is a lower initial estimate than I'd have given, "really performed at a high level" is a little more glowing assessment. 38 catches, 505, 6 td's (12, 170, 2 / game) good not great.

Special Teams gotta say way up. Punter is mvp at the break.

I would say the WR lower “expectation” was also based on what we’ve historically had here.

Marching Band: Stock way up. Withstood massive ISUx douche-baggery and survived to tell about it.

Cheerleaders: Stock even. Supported the boys well with no controversy.

Assistant Coaches/Gophers: Stock way up. Scavenged the entire Ames metro area for food and scored. Fueled the boys to a big win.

Defensive line has got to get better production. I think I read we are last in the country for TFL. I was hoping those guys were going to tear some people up.

So on the bye week, what do the coaches focus on? I wonder if they're looking ahead 3 weeks?

The coaches I bet are really telling the players all about the next opponent and that game plan. The coaches are probably also working on Mich in the background. No looking ahead please

We know KF.

It’s fundamentals. Fundamentals.
Fun. Da. Mentals.
Getting healthy.
Get up on class work.

Walking through some new plays. Getting rust off plays have slowly been adding.

I brought it up after game one and I brought it up again after game two, but both times it just kind of was shrugged away. That stat shows there might actually be an underlying problem here.

I don’t know what the answer is. Maybe we need to rotate more players in on the Dline. It’s going to be very tough for any defense to play at a high level if they can’t generate negative plays.

It is awfully hard for 4 guys to get much pressure when the teams we have played have schemed to protect the QBs with 6 guys.

Hopefully he called in Mr. Miyagi to help get some of these guys healthy.

Maybe all is not lost. Given the limited number of defensive plays we’ve had, it appears AJE is still generating a ton of pressure. Soon those will likely become sacks, but I still feel we need Golston, Nixon, Jones, and others to step it up on the defensive front, and I think they can do it.

Punting and kicking units have been very good this year, but I think our BEST special teams play is our Kickoff coverage unit. Every time someone tries to run it back I KNOW they are not getting to the 20 yard line, much less the 25.

ISU finally gave up and just started fair catching everything, which pissed me off.

Love that unit. Hope they can keep it up all year and especially next year after Amani Jones graduates. They really like to hit people!
