Still Love this Team

I still like this team. But I can hardly stand the inconsistencies. If you're gonna be good, be good. If you're gonna suck then suck.

tired of having my hopes raised then the door slamming shut.

Exactly where I'm at. I could have dealt with losing to Purdue today (another tournament team), but yesterday's game still makes my blood boil. Just when I start feeling good about things.. The team was on a streak and looked good doing it, then it's a swift kick in the crotch to bring me back to reality, a state where I don't feel like watching ANY basketball at ALL until next Thursday. It's maddening, and an all-too-familiar feeling since 2000.

Guess I'm just sick of watching tournaments in which Iowa is not involved.

Win the games you're supposed to win, Hawks. Our last 3 losses (Minny, NW, PSU) are all against teams that were double digit seeds in this year's BTT.

anyone who's watched more than a handful of games this season can tell that there is a far cry between PSU and Rutgers, so I don't know what to tell ya. Maybe watch more basketball.

This. Just go look at the final score in Penn State's conference losses. They are 82 in Kenpom. We are 25. They are 101 RPI...probably top 100 win or lose today just by playing Purdue. We are 45. Sagarin has Penn State at 80. We are 24.

Side Note - And this is why I wanted the 4 seed instead of the 5 seed. Nothing good could happen yesterday...only bad.

I guess my reason for remaining optimistic is in reality this game meant absolutely nothing to Iowa and they played that way. They're already in the dance stood very little chance of beating Wiscy and aside from getting an opportunity to avenge a loss to Purdue, whether we like it or not, other than winning the tournament it meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. They looked and played like a team that was simply going through the motions.

HA! Good one mate! I watch plenty of it. PSU and Rutgers split the games they played each other this year. PSU beat the goofers and Nebraska, their only other conference wins. Rutgers only other win was Wisconsin (yes I know Treavon injured that game and Kaminsky out with some head injury/concussion something or other). The 2 teams (PSU and Rutgers ) share the bottom of the BIG 10 by a separation of 2 games. Don't kid yourself pal, there is a reason that PSU can't close out all these "close games" they been losing. The Hawks never should have lost to them. I don't intend to get into a pi**ing match with ya over who's worse, PSU or Rutgers, PSU might be better, but not by much.

Penn State - 82 in Kenpom & 101 RPI & 80 Sagarin

Rutgers - 218 in Ken pom & 175 RPI & 172 Sagarin

Penn State is far better. And Penn State improved over the course of the season. Rutgers tanked. We shouldn't have lost yesterday but the team that beat us is far better than Rutgers.

Point taken. The stats you dug up definitely put PSU well above Rutgers. As previously stated, never intended to have a "whose worse" debate. My whole point would be, if you were to put the Hawks metrics against your post for PSU and Rutgers, there should be no comparision. Still soakin up my tears after losing yesterday.

No problem. As I move past yesterday's loss I'm wondering if Purdue will crush Penn State or if Penn State is going to make one of those unexpected BTT runs...has 1 more win in them. Purdue isn't a world beater.

I agree, shouldn't have lost... but peeps be acting like we just lost to Rutgers or Campbell. That's just not the case. PSU played well all season, even if it didn't show in the W/L column and they have a couple of good guards and that has given Iowa fits all season. I'm not saying they are good team, I'm saying they aren't as bad as a lot want to make them out to be. They're going to be playing in some sort of postseason. Iowa came in winning 6 straight, unless you're one of the few elite teams in the country (and Iowa is not and is not really that close, so maybe we need to temper our expectations but Iowa as a program is not above losing to a team like PSU) you expect winning streaks to come to an end one way or another sooner than later. We've won 6 out of our last 7 and still are one of the hottest teams in the country heading to the tournament.

Truthfully, I am not surprised. Look, we had won 6 in a row and that is really good for good team. Did we really think Iowa was going to win at least 11 games in a row? It stinks that we lost, but I remember the jNW loss and I was patient. To me, this resets Iowa back to after the jNW game and we are absolutely still capable of a good run in the NCAA. Patience, my Hawkeye friends, patience.

PSU has 18 wins, it's not like we just lost to Rutgers. So much stupid on this board the day after a loss. I would feel much worse if Iowa were to play well in the B1G tourney and than come out flat next week. I think this can actually be a positive and help them refocus and get ready next week... instead of getting too many pats on the back so to say (ya know, like the last few weeks). This is a good team that still is playing over expectations... I don't really care who they draw, just the fact that they are in it is enough at this point in the program rebuild for me.

Like they did under Alford.

Go back and look at those 18 Penn State wins. Pretty sure they were something like 12-1 going into the conference part of the schedule, and those 12 wins were a cupcake feast. They are not Rutgers, but they ain't a far cry from it either.

Their Strength of Schedule rating is #86 which makes them the worst in the Big 10.... however, it makes them better than all but Illinois State in the MVC.

Right now, according to Joe Lunardi...

Iowa is a #7 seed in the East playing their first round game against Dayton at Omaha. If they win they will likely play Kansas.
Purdue is a #11 seed in the West playing their first round game against West Virginia in Columbus. If they win (unlikely) they will likely play Notre Dame.

Before the Penn State game I was fully planning on making the trip to Omaha and paying for tickets to watch Iowa's first true NCAA tournament game in years (if they got placed in Omaha). After yesterday though I can't justify spending a couple hundred on tickets and wasting an entire day just to watch them not show up yet again. History has shown that this team doesn't rebound well from bad losses. I will just sit at home and punch couch pillows in frustration as they play like crap and go home with their tail between their legs.

Actually, recent history has shown they can bounce back from bad losses.

Hopefully, whether they win or lose, they play well. I would prefer a win.

Not really unless you count the "stupid" as those who believe that beating 6 average to poor teams to end the season was some big harbinger of greatness for this Iowa team. Our schedule was very kind to us at season's end. If you would have thrown a 2nd game in there against Maryland and Michigan State, Iowa would be playing in the NIT.
