still average

Some on here seem to spend a lot of time complaining about hypothetical comments that they imagine that some people might make in the future. Seems like an odd thing to complain about. Just an observation.

edit: And not just on this thread, or within this forum, but across the discussion boards; I have seen it over and over, and it seems like a weird way to spend your time. But then again, so is me making this observation, and yet here I am.

Iowa has Wisconsin, Northwestern and Nebraska at home this year.

I think anything less than a Western Division Championship will be a disappointment this year. A 7-2 conference record will do it, if it is the correct 7 (must win those 3 home games). 6-3 might even earn a tie

This team has the talent to win or tie for the Division this year, and that should be the expectation.

That is every team going into the season. If this or that happens that's on the coaches for not developing enough quality depth at positions. Still no excuse in my book.
That's one way of looking at it I suppose. I don't think it'd be fair to expect the same production from Mansel or especially Petras as we will Stanley. Sure every team has a new influx of depth to worry about every year one way or another. The margin of error with us is what it is because of the 'developmental program' in which Iowa is. We typically rely less on the younger players if we can help it and value experience so if an experienced player goes down... It just is what it is anymore. One persons valid reason can be looked at as inexcusable to another..

Which is precisely why I don’t consider KF a HOF coach. He’ll likely get in based on otherwise likeable attributes, but you don’t see Paul Chryst losing to garbage teams.

What do people consider "average" for football?

I think 10+ wins is a super outstanding season
9 wins is a very good season
8 wins is a decent/pretty good season
7 wins is the minimum we should win
6 wins is a very, very big disappointment.

This is the problem with football. 2 wins is a HUGE difference. The biggest flaw over Kirk Ferentz entire career is the fact he has lost entirely too many games to teams he shouldn't lose to.

IMO what qualifies as "good" or "disappointing" depends in part on the context of the season. Is it a rebuilding type of year, or did we have a good year the previous season and most of that team coming back? 8-4 in 2013 following the 4-8 season was a good year in my book, but 8-4 in 2016 following the Rose Bowl team was a disappointment.

That said, 7-5 is very "meh" to me. 6-6 or worse is bad. 8-4 is a solid season, and anything above that is gravy. (In my mind)

Iowa has been a 7-5/8-4 program typically, for years and years now. Until further notice, that is what I expect to get, regardless of what I think the outcome should be. Just no real reason to realistically expect anything different these days.

If you want me to classify it, I'd call Iowa football average to a little above. Not much more than that.
