still average

I see the Iowa sports media is making up excuses already. Playing that “young card” again. The following song and video must be one of Iowa’s sports media’s and Barta’s favorites.

1. Iowa never plays well when expectations (other than those of fans) are high. Never.

2. 6-6 conference behind Wisconsin and NW, tied with Purdue. Loss in the Ron's A-1 Vaccum Cleaner Repair Bowl.

Now prove me wrong Hawkeyes.

I don’t know why that is. Since expectations are so low from the sports pundits this could be one of those surprise years. At least I certainly hope so.

I have always wished nothing but the best for the coaches, players, and fans. It gets frustrating to go into every season with built in lower expectations just so you can live with the mediocrity that usually is the result. As the article stated the 2016 season looked to be special after the 2015 season and with what looked like a great nucleus of players returning. We all seen how that turned out as “par” for the course when expectations are high for i O W A football as you pointed out.

I think they will. I sure hope they aren't 6-6 this year. If things bounce our way 9 wins could be the floor. We have talent all over just a matter of how fast they gel. I think the Wisky game to start off the BIG season will be an interesting big time barometer for how the season may go

Iowa is rarely 6-6, not sure where that is coming from. 7-5 a lot and sometimes they hit 8 wins.

If you're prognosticating a season just put Iowa at 7.5 O/U and you have a 90% chance of being right.

What do people consider "average" for football?

I think 10+ wins is a super outstanding season
9 wins is a very good season
8 wins is a decent/pretty good season
7 wins is the minimum we should win
6 wins is a very, very big disappointment.

This is the problem with football. 2 wins is a HUGE difference. The biggest flaw over Kirk Ferentz entire career is the fact he has lost entirely too many games to teams he shouldn't lose to.

Fair assessment, but those wins should be regular season wins. For example eight wins after a 7-5 season is a “meh” type of season. However if a 8-4 season turns into an 9-4 with a bowl win then that’s a good year.............IMHO.

Would love to see the 11-1 type of seasons sprinkled in a little more often. If 2015 had been followed with an 11-1 or 10-2 season then maybe people could say we may have reached a new level in King Kirk’s reign, but that didn’t happen. Instead the King took a turn toward peasantry.

Meh.
We really shouldn't lose any non conference games. It's not like we are playing Oklahoma or Alabama.
That's 3 wins right there. So winning 5 of 9 the rest of the way is 'pretty good"? 55.5%??

If they go 6-6, I'm sure there will be plenty of excuses.
Injuries are the main ones that could happen. Say Stanley went down... Fant or either tackle going down.. A Dlineman or two going down with the new LBs underperforming. There's certainly scenarios that Debbie downers could come up with for it to happen. Our margin for error is as usual pretty thin.

The important thing to remember is that other teams generally don't succumb to injuries. The vast majority of the time, only Iowa experiences this phenomenon. Don't listen to those clowns that think excuses are for losers. They're just poor sports.

6-6 without significant injuries and there would be no excuses.
6-6 with significant injuries and said injuries might be an explanation, not an excuse.

One fan's explanation is another fan's excuse.

I've seen something like this before....

Iowa is in the west division of the Big Ten and we’re thinking 8 wins is good. Good grief

There are about 25 P5 teams who have 80 wins over the last 10 years. That is 8 wins per year, and that puts you around the top 25 if you can do that every year.

The people who try to crap on 8 wins years I just don't get. I mean no it isn't the greatest season that is for sure, but come on, it isn't like it is dog shit either.

Also @eveningnewsteam do you think Iowa's schedule was dog shit last season? It was a top 10 schedule and yeah Iowa plays in the B1G West.

"6-6 with a bowl invite is a pretty decent season, a rebuilding season. I am not surprised some fans are upset, can't please everyone. It is a tough business."

Prepping for KF comments after "bowl" invite this year...

Agree.

10+ is a special season
9 is damn good season
8 decent and should be AT LEAST this every year with 3 non-conference games. This means your now hovering around .500 in your conference and the goal should be to be better than half the teams in one's conference.
7-5 is really .500 in my eyes with 2 cupcakes usually on the schedule. Also prob 4 down in one's division which isn't that good.

That is every team going into the season. If this or that happens that's on the coaches for not developing enough quality depth at positions. Still no excuse in my book.
