I think Ferentz is more like Tyler Perry.
The reason I don't think your analogy works is that under your premise, Steve Perry was willing to change, to become something he was not, whereas, Kirk has been, and is, the same guy. Only recently have we seen some inkling he is willing to change, but in small doses, and even those, it seems to me, are being done reluctantly. I think this Fall, we'll see whether there are any real changes in his approach to football. Last year was a mashup of the worst of 2 offenses. Hopefully, it will be different this season.
BTW - This is why we loved him in the past, and now why we are frustrated by him.
Ah, when has your posts that don't change anyone's opinions ever stopped you from posting? I'm won't cross over to political topics 'cause I want to continue to post.
I will never forget the words of a high school coach in the Boston area who coached a recruit Iowa was pursuing. I think he came with the recruit to visit Iowa and afterward he said that KF was amazing in meetings with the coaching staff...his quote '' KF was incredible in his organizational meetings...the guy could be President of the US..''
I suspect that KF's talents are more subtle than the OP is willing to recognize. The OP clearly underrates the complexity involved in running a 100 million/yr college football program. To flatly state that KF is not head coaching material is just plain stupid. Why the OP feels compelled to beat this drum every fricking day of the year is beyond me...clearly obsessed with KF...if I was KF I would beef up home security.
You make a valid point. Most people on here are too set in their ways to have their opinions changed. I'm not asking him to stop posting, nor would I ever. Freed posts what he feels in a diplomatic matter, and I respect that. What I don't respect is that it's virtually always the same thing. It's always some sort of hate directed at KF. At what point does it become stale?
Freed - I understand your frustration with the program and leadership. I can empathize.
But in an effort to turn this conversation into something more constructive let me pose this question;
What else would you like KF to do over the spring/summer that would cause you to reconsider your desire to have him replaced?
He's made wholesale changes in coaching (whether it was by choice or by necessity of saving his job is mostly irrelevant; the changes were made), the spring game showcased a different pace of play, a new offensive style (at the very least a hybrid of the old with a newer style) and a no-huddle look.
Granted the skeptic in me says it remains be seen what (if any) of these components will actually make it to a real game but you've got to admit the approach KF has taken this off-season is significantly different than previous years.
Looks like you answered your own question, for me.
As I posted in one of the many post-spring game threads, for the first time in several seasons, I was actually somewhat intrigued and pleasantly surprised by the offense. It was actually fun to be at the game and be entertained by the product on the field (something that happened in exactly 1 game all of last season.) For this long-time season ticket holder and even longer Hawkeye fan, I felt a flicker of hope and anticipation for the upcoming season and less of the regret I had at having renewed my seats.
I found myself thinking, "Give KF a little credit. He made coaching changes and, based on the spring game, appears to have made some strategy / scheme changes, as well."
Then, I read today's "mashup" and hear that he's still dragging his feet on letting the G. D. OC do what he does best -- run the damn offense in a manner that is both enjoyable to watch and really does give it the best chance at success by maximizing the strengths and compensating for the weaknesses. He's still out there tempering expectations and undermining the excitement the new guys are trying to generate.
The "skeptic" just got validated, even more! Kurk will manage to throw his wet blanket on the evolution of the offense and we'll see the same ol' between the tackles into an 8-man box approach as we have for the last several seasons. He should change his name from "Kurk" to "Kibosh".
well they certainly tampered with them last year...but I'm hoping they'll actually execute on those new passing concepts. (Run game should be same) - sounds like they'll be showing different looks than under KOK.
I hadn't heard KF was wavering on the new approach.
My overall point was there have been changes this spring/summer, we seem to to be tampering with new offensive concepts. That's is/has been my biggest source of complaints. Until the season starts, I can't really expect more changes than that from KF.
If the season starts and the changes don't see the light of day during the game, you better believe I'll be griping about it. Until then I re-ask the question "What else would you like KF to do over the spring/summer that would cause you to reconsider your desire to have him replaced?"
I think Ferentz is more like Tyler Perry.
Ok, my direct answer ...
1) Show full support of your G.D. OC on the circuit. Stop the wet-blanket tempering and contradictions. If you want us to give the guy a 2nd chance, especially after last year's embarrassment, and buy into the "changes" beyond simply being "different coaches", you better damn-well start selling it rather than undermining it.
2) I want it directly asked of him, "Will the type of offense we saw in the spring game be what we see in every game this fall?" I want to hear him answer nothing short of an enthusiastic, "Absolutely!"
I'd even accept, "Well, we are obviously going to run our offense based on our strengths and how we feel is best to attack our opponents weaknesses. I can't say that we will exclusively run a no-huddle, 4 or 5 wide attack that you saw a lot of during the spring game. However, we are very intent on incorporating much more of a no-huddle, up-tempo attack into our base offense and it's safe to say that you will see much more of what you saw in the spring game on a regular basis during the live season."
That's all you can ask for over the spring / summer. Unfortunately, during that time it's nothing more than lip-service. So, the question really needs to be asked, "What else would you like KF to do in the fall that would cause me to reconsider my desire to have him replaced?"
Simple ... follow throughwith an entertaining, competitive product on the field that is constantly attacking to score points.
Completely understand. I should take a rest from venting my criticism of ferentz.
Really? You think I'm diplomatic? A few on here think I'm nothing but a hater. Couldn't be more off when they say that. I actually identify with ferentz. I used to be very successful. He and I are actually brothers in that regard. I know what it's like to work even harder than you did when you were successful and still come up short.
I get why he's making the coaching changes. I made a lot of changes too, but it was too late.
Hey, maybe I should write up an analogy between ferentz and myself.
