So I played golf yesterday with a guy who has had a couple candid talks with Fran. He gets the vibe that if turns this program around, he would likely take a big time job on the east coast, if the offer was there.

So I ask Hawkeye Nation. If he makes the Hawkeye program successful…

1) Do you think he would take a job back east?
2) Would you hold a grudge?

I highly doubt he would return to the east coast. Mama bear (Mrs. Mc) is one of the main reasons they chose Iowa. She wanted to live in the midwest to be close to her family. She's a native of Minnesota.

If Fran does manage to make the program consistently good again I think the university has shown that it's willing to pay top dollar to successful coaches to keep them in Iowa City.

Unless he just doesn't particularly like living in IC he may have no reason to move on.

The cart is about 5,000 miles ahead of the horse on this... and on hearsay, nonetheless.

Seeing as how we got outbid by NM for Alford's services and we are paying Kurt north of 3.5 despite his losing record to Northwestern and Iowa State, I'm at a loss as to who these successful coaches who have been paid top dollar are.

if he turns the basketball program around, he will be incredibly popular in Iowa and with the new basketball facilities and the ensuing payday, he'd have a pretty great gig in IC.

Well, I think it's safe to say that Alford wanted to leave (seeing as how a raise at Iowa probably wasn't forthcoming). If he had been successful here I think that just maybe we might have been able to pay more than NM.

I'm not sure who this "Kurt" you're referring to is. Could you amplify your remarks please.

Would his leaving be another sign of America's declining morality?

If by outbid, you mean NM offered him actual, real money to coach there and Iowa didn't, then you'd be right.

The Iowa City environment and the children's education just might keep Fran around. One of the best small cities in America to raise a family.

if he turns it around and keeps getting players like Gesell and Woody why would he leave, he'd be a king here in Iowa, out east he'd be just another coach
