Gatens:streaky shooter liability on defense and rebounding
May: great athlete, good rebounder, power forward in a guard's body, ball skills more suited for MVC

Fran wants to create offense off his defense and May fits that but struggles in the halfcourt offense, Next years team could have a couple of new surprises to the top 9 rotation, players that fit Fran's style better than Lick's.

The Mayor has done a great job with his team so far and they coulld be pretty good next yr!

Gatens sounds like a great kid but McCabe may be a better shooter right now plus he is taller and a better passer and rebounder.

Robe Howe wrote an atricle on Matt Gatens and Fran was quoted saying that in the first 3 and a half weeks of practice, Matt was as dominant of a player as he had ever coached.

I doubt he will be benching a player he has such a high regard for.

The only possible change would be May. I haven't seem him preform the last few games. Gatens is a lock in the starting lineup.

As much as I like Cole, Iowa needs to get bigger. I would like to see Cole's energy off the bench.
Gatens doesn't hurt Iowa defensively and he is a very good passer, I would like too see he and May take more 12 to 15 ft shots.
Basabe just might be our best player right now.

This would probably be the way to go just for the sake of the future. I'm just not sure they will slight Cole by taking him out of the starting line up after the hardwork and dedication he has put in this program.

I'm also not ready to crown Brommer. He had a very nice game last night but if he starts, he may have to sit out with 2 fouls and 15 minutes left in the first half.

I don't disagree with you, I think in Brommers first two seasons he set a world record for fouls per minute.
That would be the only change, but it is also nice having Brommer come off the bench and giving us what he has.
I like our bench this year, unlike years past, if he keeps coming off it, I have no issues.

Gatens is a streaky shooter? Right now, sure. Maybe that has something to do with his wrist injury? Just a thought.

While I understand your reasons, there is no way (barring some bad stretch) that we sit May or Gatens. Fran loves both and rightfully so. Yes, May had a bad game against ISU, but he was our leading scorer and without a doubt our best defender and probably most athletic guy on the court.

Gatens is Gatens. The guy can shoot. Yes, he is a streaky shooter, but what shooter isn't? He came alive against ISU in the first half and shut it down in the 2nd, which Fran said he talked to Gatens about.

Marble has much more work to do to start and part of that is that he is going to have to play the point. Don't get me wrong, I think Marble will be great, but I like what he is doing coming off the bench.

I agree with you guys. I'm guessing Cole will start but the last two games I was extremely comfortable with Brommer coming in.

His stats over the last 3 games
15 mpg, 73% fg%, 1/7 ft's (yikes), 5.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 4 assists, 2 steals, a block, and only 1 turnover.

It's contagious, the team as a whole cannot shoot FT's, so it really isn't that scary he was 1/7:D

We were 12/23 as a team agains ISU that calls for a (yikes):D

May is our leading scorer. Gatens is our leading returning scorer...gutting it out and playing hurt. I don't think the starting line-up will change unless a starter gets hurt. If it does change I'll be shocked if it's Gatens or May that sits. Any of the other 3 are more likely.

As recent as 1- 1/2 weeks ago many were throwing Brommer to the wolves. Worthless-never make it-waste of a scholorship. I was almost convinced. But I think we were all (or most of us) wrong. He's showing real potential and I'm really happy to have been wrong! He's definitely better than I thought.

I can understand everyone's concern with Matt. I know this is not a Gatens thread, but if you are placing out of the starting line up then he needs defended. First, he has been hurt which has hurt his shooting. He will end of being a very dependable outside shooter the rest of the season. Secondly he is finally playing his true position. He has not had to run around guarding shooting guards since coming to campus. That takes practice. He will be fine on defense once we get more game time against shooting guards. He has spent two years overmatched on the blocks by taller, quicker small forwards. He will be fine we is still adjusting to new style. I think the new style has been a big change for matt. Matt has wanted to play the 2 since coming on campus. He will excell once he get a little more comfortable.

Same as now - Gatens, May, Cartwright, Bas and Cole. I am impressed with all the freshman. McCabe will have some good moments this year, Marble will need more time to develop, but has done some nice things. Right now, need shooters and confidence. Don't really have the personnel to do what Mac probably wants to do. Will take time, but look a lot better recently and should keep getting more comfortable. Don't expect a lot of wins.

I agree, same starting lineup.

I like the rotation of the players. But Marble's playing time needs to overlapwith Cartwright. Not entirely, but some would help in his development/confidence. Mr. Marble's upside at PG is huge. He just needs the experience. Let Roy bring the ball up the court, and if he gets stuck - like he did occassionally on Friday - then Cartwright is right there to help. Nobody seemed to help when needed.

Payne would be good in overlapping playtime with Marble, as well. To bad we won't see him for another 6 weeks or so! Cully is the one player that we are missing that could help out significantly.

As for the personnel, I think we have it, outside of a decent 3 point shooter. Or another good rebounder/inside defender, with experience. But again, I think we have it, they just need to gain experience and confidence. Unfortunately that will probably not be acheived until 2011...

Just a comment on Brommer: I was at the ISU game friday and the fan I was sitting next to made a valid point, when he comes in, if he makes his first shot he takes, he's gold. If he misses it, he loses a ton of confidence and his game falls. Also good points about the lineup. I personally feel Gatens and May will stay in it with Brommer and Marble off the bench this yeat
