Starting DLine without Binns

Daniels, Daniel, and Alvis will all be in the mix. Binns will get a one game suspension. He will miss Eastern Illinois, so it won't matter much. The other guys are hungry and are going to really get after it. Actually, it is a great opportunity to get these guys some reps. It isn't like last year when they threw Castillo out there against UNI or Lowe against ASU. The back-ups on the D-Line are good enough to start on most teams.

By and large, I agree with CAARHawk's take here. While I don't like our DL being down such a talented starter ... I do like the guys we have who could step up and contribute. In some respects, having Binns out for the first game or two could prove to be pretty huge motivator for the guys during fall camp. There are a lot of guys who could throw their name into the ring as a potential starter through those first few games.

Prater got a multiple game suspension, but he wouldnt have gotten the same suspension cause soon afterwards Bernstein got injured for the year. Had the reversed happened, it would have been one game.

I think BB gets 2 games and some work with "baldy"......no fun.

I hope our team gets their heads on and some of the leaders step up and kick some @#$. Don't rule our D Alvis being in the mix at DE too.

That's not at all true. Prater getting the 2nd game added was due to the way he handled things after getting caught. Bernstine's injury wouldn't have impacted the punishment one bit.

The Iowa coaches have never been a win-at-all-costs group.

Guarantee you it will be next man in. They will not move Ballard outside....not even a remote chance.

At this time last year, I don't anyone would have considered him inside to be a remote possibility either, and the coaches did anyway. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying that the coaching staff will put the best four on the line, in whatever arrangement they feel gives them the best chance for success. If it means moving Ballard back to DE...that is what will happen.

Agreed, loess. You already have a disruption to the starting 4, why add a second one with a position change. There's much more technique variation between DE and DT than most realize and even with last season under his belt, Ballard is still on the learning curve at DT.
(Remember, it wasn't until about game 9 that he was really becoming a consistent threat at DT. With so much more upside, you just don't set him back in his progression at the position.)

Since its only ISU and Eastern Illinois, I'm not going to lose sleep over a two game suspension. (if thats what it comes down to)

Not true. hawkeyebob and I, among others, had anticipated that he would move inside quite a while ago. The thought process got initiated right after King and Kroul left.

Anyhow, Ballard most likely will not move. The new starting LBs could use the benefit of personnel continuity somewhere along the line. A temporary shift of Ballard to DE simply doesn't make sense. Having continuity with Ballard, Klug, and Clayborn all in their "normal" spots will give the 1st year starters at LB maximal personnel continuity in front of them.

It's true that Daniels is arguably our best #5 ... however, this is an instance where it would probably help the team more to put the top DE candidate in.

I also thinks it sends a bad message to his back up that we don't think you can handle it for one game. This staff is very consistent in giving the next man in mantra...I for one also knew Ballard was moving inside, when most thought it would be Clayborn...I must be clairvoyant...LOL

With the University's new stance against drinking there's no way Binns gets off with anything less than a two game suspension. I think the Hawks will be fine, "next man in" has worked well thus far.

I think you should be more worried about AA then how many games KF suspends someone. Afterall Iowa started a 3rd string corner and AA still couldn't get ISU into the endzone. So maybe it is safe to say if Prater would have played ISU wouldn't have even score the 3 they did.
