Stanzi Final Drive

I apologize if this has been posted, and I'm sure it has somewhere. However, I've stayed away from the board over the past few days to let the 5 stages of grief take their natural progression. We've probably gone through denial, anger, and bargaining at this stage and we only have depression and acceptance left. I'm actually impressed that many have reached the acceptance stage earlier than expected and have surmised that things could be much, much worse. Can you imagine what it would be like to be Iowa State instead of Iowa. Now, if that thought doesn't get you to the acceptance stage, nothing will.

Now to the reason for my post...I was sitting on the 30 yard line, 20 rows behind the Iowa bench Saturday night. I'm convinced Stanzi got dinged in the head on that second down sack on the final drive. I believe Ferentz considered taking him out as James V. took a b-line right to the situation and they opted to leave Stanzi in the game. I don't think Stanzi was all there at the end of that game hence his inability to get rid of the ball. He had time to at least get it out of bounds or toss it up and let one of his receivers make a play...just my opinion.

The fact he still had some cobwebs to shake loose would certainly be an explanation why he didn't try to get rid of the ball on 3rd or at least throw a prayer downfield on 4th down. Good observation. I just couldn't understand why he just held the ball (granted, those LB's were charging fast, but he could see it coming). If true, your observation would help me feel better about him just taking the hits, maybe he wasn't all there.

I convinced of it...James V. came down to Ferentz in a hurry on the time out and the look on his face wasn't about what play they were going to call. Stanzi was shaking off the cobwebs...he didn't look right and they were considering it. It will be interesting to see if this comes out. I don't see KF and RS making excuses however.

JV thought he was going in the game...he had that look of shock and excitement all at once...like "holy crap" and "I'm going to win this (*&)*&_* ucker."

Even if true the odds that JVB could have come in and tie the game up staring at a 3rd and "very long" were very small. At that point in the game AZ had all the momentum and taking the ball back down field to tie it up was a long shot. This game truly rests on events that happened before the last drive. Take your pick; the blocked punt, the pick six, the kickoff runback, it doesn't matter. Take away one of those and we have a ballgame. Otherwise, the outcome of the game was pretty much decided once Foles nailed that receiver for the 40+ yard gain with 5:00 minutes left.

If that's the case, then MSU last year shouldn't have happened. I can't watch the tape as my DVR cut off in the fourth quarter due to time, but I know what I saw. Someone out there saw the same thing...my brother and I were sitting there saying Stanzi isn't all there...and the fact that JV came running over like he was going in was proof to us. I don't think KOK and Ferentz were asking his opinion on a play.

I'm telling you we would have had a better chance with JV as I don't think Stanzi was clear in the head...and his reaction to the pressure was proof. A clear headed Stanzi gambles and tries to make a play.

Michigan State did the exact opposite of what Arizona did. They dropped a ton of guys into coverage until we got into the red zone, or close to it. So I'm not sure that's a great comparison.

I wish I would have been paying more attention (read: not been so drunk by then) that I had noticed if Stanzi took a shot to the head.

I watched the play on ESPN3 replay just a minute ago. It cut out before showing anything on the sideline, but Ricky did get a decent shot to the head.

I'm not trying to make excuses here, but it will be interesting to see if anyone says anything. Stanzi came to the sidelines shaking his head and you could tell he was woozy. I honestly thought this was surely posted somewhere.

Did anyone post that the Arizona fans were a bunch of dicks? Please tell me someone got that in. They had the least amount of class of any stadium/team I've visited. I know we have our issues in IC, but I'm telling you...the verbal confrontations were ridiculous. Talking smack the way many of them did was way out of line.

My point is that the last drive in inconsequential. The game and momentum were already decided at that point. MSU last year was different. The whole game was pretty much a draw right until the last drive. This game, UofA had momentum from the very first Iowa drive when they took us three and out and blocked the punt. We had multiple opportunities to shave points off earlier in the game and we didn't do it. I understand where you coming from in the regards that JVB could have come in and played better than a shaken Stanzi, but at that point, we were looking at a 3rd and 18 I believe. Joe Montana probably couldn't have converted in that situation. The last drive didn't matter. We had already dug a hole long before...

I was there, I felt it first hand. They acted like they haven't been there before...

Probably because they haven't! **** them! I bet we still end up higher in the polls then they do at the end of the season!

Well he either wilted like a 9th grader or was dinged because the last half of the 4th qtr he played very poorly. No poise at all.
If he was injured JVB should have been in period.

I couldn't agree more. I've done my share of traveling to opposing stadiums and every fan base has idiots who go way overboard, but this was at a completely different level. These were attacks on the good people of the State of Iowa. I won't stand for that crap.

So here's what I did. I went to the crustiest disco bar on the campus that was filled with Arizona fans reveling in their victory and drinking their Shirley Temples. I went in an grabbed the microphone from DJ Jazzy Jeff and proceed to tell them what I thought of their so called victory. I then just started punching people, men, women, mostly men dressed as women, everyone I could find. However, at one point I started to get overwhelmed as there were just too many of them. It was weird as I really couldn't understand what any of them were saying as the lisps were so heavy. Just when I thought I was going to get my *** kicked, I noticed all these guys (or girls, not sure which) just flying around. Someone was helping me. I couldn't tell who it was, but just when everyone was laid out, bleeding on the floor, I got a brief glimpse of number 12 leaving the bar.

We are freaking back baby.

MelroseGuy was wearing a #12 jersey?

I just rewatched the last series of the game, and I know why stanzi pump faked and was hesitant to throw. sandeman ran a drag and the MLB cleaned his clock when crossing which was stanzi's primary reciever on that play, since sandeman was knocked on his a$$ and Gettis got schooled on a spin move, it resulted in a sack. Again this happened on the 2nd play of our last drive following DJK's 7 yard completion. Just thought i would give some explanation on the first of the three sacks answering why he had to take the sack.

Guys, it is Arizona. Full of people who couldn't make it in or to L.A. What did you expect? Phoenix is one of my least favorite cities in the country. They have a couple of nice spots in the North, but everything from Phoenix on south is a dirt hole. U of A is full of kids that couldn't get into the better Pac Ten schools. I know. I grew up in L.A. and had lots of friends who went there.

Basically, it is a fall back state for everyone that can't afford to live in better warm climate locations.

This is why I was so surprised at the anger everyone had about the Fiesta Bowl last year. Phoenix or South Florida? Come on, it's not even remotely close.

I have never seen Stanzi wilt like a 9th grader. C'mon man. He is a big reason we weren't 7-5 last year.

I have no idea about the JV situation nor did I notice Stanzi being woozy, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Now, here are some questions to think about though.

Does 5-6 yards really matter when you are on your 30 and pretty much looking for a prayer? Not really. Thinking back now, I think Stanzi probably did the right thing. Give your self as much time as possible to get the ball to someone, if that means taking a sack then so be it. The only thing that those 2 sacks meant were negative yards.

If he would have thrown it away and then not gotton touched, how would you have felt then?
