Stanford O = Iowa O

Stanford's offensive coordinator is an idiot. Late in the 4th quarter when OSU was sending the house on every play, they kept sending the RB into the flat on delayed screens and moved the ball prolly 45 yards running the same play over and over. Anyone who has watched any real football (e.g., Iowa) knows the best play in that situation is to send two out in the pattern, drop the QB 7 steps, have the receivers run double moves and then take a sack or throw the ball away - none of this "let's just throw it past the first wave of rushers" garbage. Luck seemed to be calling the plays himself out there, he needs a mentor like KOK to teach him what to do in those situations.

so now we're comparing Iowa, a 7-7 team, to a BCS Bowl team? C'mon guys, give me a break. I supposed our defense is similar to LSU's minus a couple players?!

Hey backoff, KOK threw a screen to the RB in the game against OU, damn near **** my pants, I can't even think that last time I've seen Iowa run that play?

I believe the last game we ran decent RB screens was Syracuse in 2007. Me and HappyChef were wondering if O'Keefe stole someone's playbook and then the screens disappeared for the remainder of the season. I do believe Adam Robinson's last play was a middle screen which placed him squarely in front of an OSU LB who nearly took his head off.

it's funny how talent makes a coach look like a genius.

Luck may be the #1 player taken in the draft.

To those who think Iowa would look exactly the same with Luck, go to the doctor and get some testing done, because your head ain't right.

I loves me some VDB, but Luck, he ain't. Vandy was a major liability in road games (save Purdon't) this year, and a primary reason for the losses.

Insightful post. I was having a similar exchange of thoughts with my brother in law, an Iowa grad who lives in Palo Alto and attends a few Stanford games each season.

The problem stems from our coaching staff and lame O coordinator. Stanford does not have not have 4 star players at every position like Oregon, USC and the SEC, but they get the most out the talent they do get. The O coordinator for Stanford mentioned that the slowest WR at Baylor would be the fastest at Stanford when lamenting that Luck did not win the Heisman. Amazingly enough, Stanford has figured out a way to spread the field and use multiple formations and packages to move the ball.

I don't recall the exact numbers, but I believe the big ten has been outscored ~ 400 to 200 something the last two years in bowl games. With PSU and OSU getting new coaches, Iowa will be the only 1.2 yards and a could of recycled tires team left.

If Luck played for Iowa he would have about seven or eight plays to use, thus nothing would change much for Iowa, even WITH Luck. Our coach would ensure that a QB like Luck would not have much leeway and would run a very conservative offense, one of which the opposing defense would know exactly which play he would be running. The staff is quite capable of tying a QB's hands behind his back to ensure the QB takes no risk.

Dude, we get it, you hate Iowa. Way to drive the freaking point home.

Bravo! Nice to read that someone else understands how anemic our offense is and not because we don't have talent. Seriously, look at what Houston did to Penn State, yet we score 3 freaking points. Why? Because we spent all day running into an 8 man front and not throwing vertically. Same thing against OU--our starting RB is out, reserves have combined 38 carries, but KF says " we are still going to be a run first team".

Our offensive philosophy is fine - the exectution, play calling, management and freedom of the players within the offense is the problem.

There is nothing wrong with a run offense that sets up play action.

Ken Keefe (with some help from kirk most likely) is the problem.

All these great offensive lineman and such poor offensive numbers doesnt translate.

Is this a joke?

If Iowa had had Luck this year we would have been 10-2 or at least 9-3.

Maybe. I thought JVB did a good job at getting the receivers the ball but they dropped so many passes. Do you think they would have caught them from Luck instead? I think Vandy throws a nice ball and has good accuracy. I do think Luck has more presence in the pocket and seems more composed.

Our problem this year wasn't the offense the D let us down more than the O. Same with last year. When push came to shove the D couldn't make a stop. In 09' and some of the more successful years we could count on our D on 3rd down. This year it seemed we relied more on the other team to make a mistake to get them off the field. The PSU game made me sick to watch us get run on right down the field and not give our O a chance at the end of the game. The O won't be on every game but if we can count on our D like we have in the past we always had a chance.
