SPRINT the floor

Not going to lie...after the last few [painful] years of Lickliter-ball, I'm somewhat aroused by the above quote. ;)

I like the sounds of this also. Fran is quietly confident, I think, that he can get this on track fairly quickly...like next year.

Also read the article in there about Aaron White. It is awesome that he plays bb with Ray Hamilton, the TE recruit coming next year also. Buddies since the 2nd grade? Amazing coincidence. But, a real positive for both guys to have a comfort level at Iowa and probably helping keep them at Iowa for 4-5 years. Wonder if White might think about red-shirting...I think Hamilton could with CJ ,Herman,Derby, ect ahead of him at TE....if we get Kravish,he also might need a redshirt...skinny right now. Wants to be a doctor,so a 5th year might be good for him also.

Ditto.. It may not be particular GOOD basketball this year, but it sure won't be boring. I'm looking forward to it. A team that wants to SPRINT down the floor will be a breath of fresh air. We haven't seen that in about 12 years........

Who knows, maybe we will be pleasantly surprised with the results, too.

I'm not comparing McCaffery to Bobby Knight, but Texas Tech was chopped liver when night was hired, and did they not make the NCAA Tournament the first year with Knight as their coach? But maybe Knight inherited better talent, I don't really know.

And NCAA Tournament is not my prediction for this year's Iowa team. I'm just saying that with a good coach, I think maybe we would be surprised at how quickly the culture would start to change with the program. Time will tell if Fran is the Man, but if he is, I think we'll see some results sooner rather than later. I like what I'm hearing so far..

I sense a lot of mutual respect and commitment mixed with high expectations. A great foundation to build on.

gatens looked skinny at the scrimmage

Gordon Hayward is 6'8" and was listed at 200 last year, and he was one of the top players in the country. I'm not saying Gatens is on Hayward's talent level, but you can be a little skinny and still be a premier player. And if we're running the uptempo, sprinting game, size isn't as important.

Quickness can be great but if the officials don't call the mugging you get when you play the Michigan States of the college basketball world, then being light in the weight department can come back to bite cha. Remember that Big Ten basketball often can resemble the football field. It all depends on how the officials want to call it. Let's also not forget that Alford really pressed conditioning in his program too. I remember reading articles about the players puking into buckets. Don't get me wrong.....the last coach wasn't worth a lick IMHO.....pun intended.

No matter how this season ends up, it will be a step forward.
Recruits like the up-tempo-run 'em outta the gym style, this new philosophy will pay dividends in the coming seasons. I like the direction the program is heading.
It's going to be exciting to watch the progression of these players and more interestingly the way the program will be perceived in the coming years.
All good things!

Tom's teams played quite physical at times, especially when Ed Horton was there, even with Jess and Russ, and they had a nice banger in Jacob Jaacks. But, oftentimes, it was the wings on the press that did a lot of the physical work by bumping and pushing and harassing, all things that Lick's teams couldnt deal with in that slow it down to nothing pace.

this is not a bash on Lick, But offensive up tempo teams have a tendency to wear the opposing teams down late in games, Freethrows that come up a little short, legs just aren't there for jump shots. This is an advantage when playing teams with a little depth drop off after the 7th or 8th player. Licks style allowed the opposition to rest on defense to some degree. Thus the teams with suspect depth didn't have to worry much, because they could rest more with the offensive slow down Iowa ran under Lick. This will no longer be the case with Coach Fran, Iowa maybe able to wear down a team that may have more talent, but has a lack of depth.
We'll see how Iowa competes against the Drakes the UNIs and the Centenarys of the world before we dive into the heart of the BT.
