Spring Signing Critical

This spring signing period is a huge time for this program. We need to get two impact players or else I don't see much improvement next year. We need a slashing guard and a solid center. White and Olgesby don't fit that description.

Another BC and Basabe like talents would be huge. Those type of impact players

No kidding!

Iowa can not go into next year with Matt Gatens and Eric May getting significant minutes on the wing. It will just be a repeat of this year. Iowa really needs a couple wings who can put the ball on the floor. At least Cully will be back next year so Marble never has to play the PG spot and he can be a wing player who seems to put the ball on the floor OK from the wing spot. I would like Iowa to get a legit wing player most likely a JUCO guy.

May is hurt and not himself. He will get his shot off when he feels right. Gatens is what he is...a better than average shooter when he has some room. I am intrigued by Marble. He really needs to increase his foot speed, though. Cully will be a calming presence next yr.

Bottom line: Shooting. If Matt is off, there are few others who can get shots off. I think White's length will be nice on the outside (I picture Wisconsin's Leuer). I agree that we need a slasher.

I really don't think health is May's issue. May's problem is he is really a jump shooter only in Big 10 play. He has a slow shot, and is not that aggressive. Guys close out on him and he chooses to pass rather than shoot. He has had plenty of chances to turn the corner with the ball but his handles are not very good so he gets scared to take the ball into traffic. He has also had chances to simply come to a jump stop and shoot a floater. He needs to get a lot more aggressive. I like his athleticism, defense, and rebounding but Iowa just struggles to score and they need to start getting their best offensive line up on the floor.

I would start:

Cartwright
Gatens
Marble
Basabe
Cole/Brommer

The only problem is there is no PG to come off the Bench.

I totally agree that may should be benched. Cully's injury kills our depth at point thus making this scenario impossible because marble is forced to back up bryce. Marble may not be as good on offense (yet) as may but he has that attack mentality that May is clearly lacking. We need that on this team to avoid those passive stretches on offense that kill us and lead to bryce trying to create and turning it over.

We as fans need to be patient. I for one believe Fran has what it takes to get his kind of players in here. If we can get Shaq Stokes or Eli carter, along with one of Olesani, Pitchford, Katenda, or another big, this team should be able to compete next year. Also, has anyone on here seen White play? Or at least seen some video? From all i read about him he seems like he'll be able to contribute next year which is something we definitely need. I just wish there was some video out there so we could see what he brings to the table.

Found this video of Pitchford. Looks pretty damn good. The kind of big that would compliment Melsahn in the post next year. Looks like he has a pretty decent jump shot as well. 3 pt. range even. I checked rivals and it appears we are the only ones to have offered him so far. I like our chances.

I agree about White. I didn't think too much of him. Mainly cause he looks like an Opie. But he has been rising quickly and really seems to assert himself. This is what I didn't like about Brommer or Archie before they got to Iowa. Players with that size in high school should dominate.

Pitchford and an aggressive guard/wing would be nice. We need a tough guard who will play D, rebound and score at the rim.

Gatens and Ogelsby can camp out at three. May can sub in to bring in some energy. Same with McCabe. These guys should be the scrappy fan faces off the bench.

This would be my desired line up.
Basabe
New Post
New Wing
Cartwright
Gatens / whoever has hot hand.

Ya think. Quite frankly, half the team could be replaced if we could find anybody to come. Fans better be happy with crawling before running. This is gonna take 3 years or more.

I agree with your assessment. Gatens though, he peaked his freshman year and has not improved a bit since. May and McCabe have fallen on hard times and they are liabilities. May has some athletic talent but you never know what your going to get. McCabe is a D-2 player. We need more eastern talent and I hope Stokes and a couple more players from NY make it to campus.

Asst. Coach Francis was in Kansas on Saturday night recruiting....according to his Twitter account. Wonder who he was there to watch.....Sunrise Christian Academy with Katenda?

Was thinking a 1 and 5 would be primary need.

After watching us get torched on the wings continually...we need help in all spots on the floor.

Could Michigan have gotten any easier looks than they did today? Inside and out. Our Zone is just a couple ball reversals away from giving the three. No one can seem to contain the dribble. We help inside when it is totally unecessary and help from the wrong spots.

You are forgetting about some of current guys too.

Cartwright has progressed significantly during the course of the year. Yes, he still forces shots and takes some ill timed ones, but his game is solid. He'll be better next year.

Devyn Marble has gotten better and better as the year has gone on as well. He could challenge for a starting spot in the lineup next year. He has the length to be effective and the skill set to succeed, just needs a little more weight. He'll get that 10-15 lbs over the summer. He should be a solid player next year.

Basabe is back and he has shown the ability to take over a game from time to time, as well. Bigs take longer to develop, so the sky's the limit with this guy.

Then you've got complimentary players like Gatens and May - both need to bring their games up next year. Gatens has been pretty consistent in his 3 years and you know what you are going to get. May needs to get back to his old self, someone we thought would thrive in this offense actually looked better in Lickliter's system. Hopefully he turns it around, he has shown flashes.

Biggest need is a center. You lose Cole and you basically have Brommer as a senior.
Also, you don't know about Cully, if he's going to be able go 100% ever again. So you have to go out and get another PG, esp with Bryce being done after next season.

The problem is, the PG and C are two of the most difficult positions to find when recruiting. They are hot commodities. Iowa is in on at least 3 solid PG recruits and at least 2 or 3 PF/C. If Iowa can get two in the spring, the Hawkeyes will be fine.

The current players will improve (we've seen improve just in-season, so there's hope).

I agree spank. Individual development from this year to next may have an even bigger impact than who fran can bring in. I agree with your analysis on Marble and Cartwright. If Marble can just play a full season at the two, get a little more consistent with his jumper, and add that 15 lbs., I think you'll see him getting significant time next year if not starting.

With Basabe, I agree with timmy doyle when he says Mel could be an All-League player starting next year. I think once he figures out how good he can be, he can be a consistent 15+ pt. scorer and grab close to 10 boards a game. Definitely a cornerstone for the future.

Yes but it will be important to build some depth. I believe many of our guys are wearing out as the season goes on. Especially BC, he's been logging big time minutes.

Everybody keeps pegging Marble at the 2. I keep thinking his natural position might end up being the three. Just not sure he has the foot speed to guard the two.

The problem is that at 6-5 he doesn't have ideal size for a 3. Slightly too slow to be a 2, slightly too small to be a 3, but he is definitely talented enough to play.
