Spring Football Preview: Breaking Down the Offense

I'm excited and optimistic about the offense next year, hopefully BF is able to utilize the tight ends well and ISM comes along and becomes a better deep threat. I feel our running game will be fine and Stanley will be more poised. Hopefully my optimism isn't misplaced :(

Me too. BF should have a better grasp of things after going through his first rodeo as well. To me it's mostly on the Oline. How those 3 guys in the middle of that line play will be the end all be all. I have confidence in Stanley taking steps the right direction and even the skill guys making plays. But they'll need holes to run through and time to throw it..

With the OL untested and brand new RBs it has to be done through the air. Stanley has the size, arm, and decision-making; Easley can make space and pull safeties away, and we have the perfect chance to use a 2 TE set with Fant and Hockenson. Both of whom are going to be the primary receivers on this team, IMO. I don’t see how this squad gets it done on the ground.

I suppose a lot depends on how well Render fills Daniel's shoes.

I have a feeling we'll be in 3rd and long more too... I think Stanley and his weapons should help convert more of them then last yr but you are probably right. If last years line struggled to run the ball it's fair to say this one sure might too... It certainly starts there. Whatever combination of 3 guys end up at center and the guard spots have to be ready to go day 1. They just do or they'll struggle. I wonder to what extent #42 Beyer might be in the mix as a play maker. Either as a big WR or hybrid TE type. They threw him out there early in the bowl game so I assume he was doing some good things in bowl prep leading up to it. He's a kid to keep an eye on anyway

Last year's line struggled running into 8 man lines and I hope BF is throwing more on first down to burn that type of defense. If Stanley and WRs can click on first down, back off the defense, then we run the ball well.

Pass to set up the run sometimes.

Amen play calling is a huge part of it too. Game against OSU is exibit A to what your saying for sure.

Good article Rob...

Which player on Iowa's team "frightens" the other team?

Will KF/BF have a paradigm shift? Odds?

How might an Iowa fan "emotionally prepare" for another season of KF ball?

How many fans are looking forward to another season of Kirk Ball?

I predict Toren Young will impress.

I'm really not sure how you can say that the OL is untested. You have 5 guys back that have played significant time...and two or three others that have played. The key with any of the good Ferentz offensive lines is that they typically have upperclassmen who have been in the program who play their best as juniors and seniors. This line is a little different in that you had two freshman OT's play last year...one a true freshman. Those two, IMO, are going to make a leap...they are both special talents and another spring and fall camp is going to be huge. They also have one thing you can't teach...natural size and athleticism. The interior is all upperclassmen who have size and should be expected to play well. I like the way this is shaping up...both in the running game and pass protection. I think we should be very optimistic.

We have talent at RB and major talent at QB & TE. The key is having someone step up on the outside to be a threat. If that happens...this team is going to be much, much better offensively...even losing a special talent like Wadley. Overall this is going to be a much better team offensively IMO.

At this point, IDK how anyone can think we'll be any better than last year on offense. I'll always be excited for football season, but I'm entering this year cautiously optimistic. Yeah sure Nate is a year older and should be better with a year under his belt. He still doesn't have WR"s, that have proven they can have an impact on a game. OL can't be considered anything but a step back compared to last year, or if nothing else it will be the same when you factor another year of experience at the tackle positions. Daniels is a huge loss. The only returning RB production came during mop up duty last year. Guessing this year will be RB by committee with no lead back getting a majority of the carries. This Kyshaun Bryan kid had a ton of huge offers out of HS. Excited to see, where he's at this spring. TE obviously will be the biggest threat to defenses. Again, I'm optimistic, just trying to temper my expectations.

Ding ding ding.
The only way to get them to back off is to be able to burn them if they don't.

I suggest we all temper our enthusiasm for the coming season. Giddy expectations of the teams prospects have totally gotten out of hand around here. From the sound of things you would think this team was occasionally competitive, could actually beat significant opponents, or had gone 12 & 2 just a few years back. Good enough to embarrass themselves in a Rose Bowl, once again.

Just remember our motto around here is "whining not winning" or was that "whining while winning". Perseverance is the key. True perverserance will get us through those occasional fluke wins and any odd winning streak we happen across.
