Spring Football Depth Chart

I think the biggest surprise is seeing Welsh ahead of Ward on the depth chart. I don't like it, if only because of the confusion of having a Walsh and a Welsh starting at guard.

That really jumped out at me, too.

Other groups that caught my interest:

WR: I like seeing Willies cracking the two deeps. I think his ceiling is pretty damn high, and he must be showing a lot to earn a spot in the two deeps so soon. Obviously, there are six WR spots available, but did Powell ever crack the two deeps last year? That could be an encouraging sign, as well.

LB: It might be a little thin, but I do think we might be pleasantly surprised with that group's play, assuming they stay healthy. They'll have a strong front four to keep pressure off of them, and what could be a very salty secondary behind them.

Secondary: Mildly surprised to see Lomax at FS, but I agree with others who think that must mean Fleming has been showing a lot to the coaches. I like the idea of having a corner-type at FS for coverage and having a reliable (if unspectacular) SS in Lowdermilk. We know what we've got in King.

If you read the presser, even Kirk was a bit surprised to see Welsh listed as starter. He quickly said that there would be competition with 4 others. I assume Ward and Simmons part of that competition. Regardless, have read good things about Welsh from practice last Fall and I think he will be a factor if not a starter. This is opening listing based as much on off-season workouts as much as playing time last year. I am guessing the final depth chart in April will have changes.

Gah, I'm just deathly afraid of our Wide Receivers.. not a lot there.

not to worry, the hawks will perfect the stretch play to the left / outsize zone to the left...when defenses put 8 guys to that side of the LOS, we'll try a pass over there to the right and they just might be open.

Why cant our coaches see how awsome having both weisman and cazeri or daniels would be if theyd be in at same time. I know weisman proved himself. But he could maybe make a bigger impact at fb if he took some of the carries there but blocked for canzeri on others. Or even run a split back formation when you have this much running back depth.

Same thing with Powell and his speed, I'd like to see him in a Percy Harvin type role, line him in the backfield and send him out on swing pass and create a mis-match with a linebacker in coverage.

Is anyone else surprised to see Faith Ekekite at DT, and up to 287 lbs. As of last year I thought he was still a slightly undersized end. Has he put on nearly 60 lbs in 2 years under Doyle? I also remember that he is supposed to be pretty athletic, interesting to see at Tackle.

Faith came in at 255 lbs or around there so he's put on about 30 in two years. I remember reading that it was taking Faith a while to get down the proper technique at DE. He is very strong and at nearly 290 lbs. he's probably projecting more of a DT. It may work out for when Davis and Trinca Pasat graduate that Jaleel and Faith could fill those roles.

I actually think KF mentioned something like this in his presser.

All these weights are exactly from last year's roster. Faith was listed at 287 last year. I'm sure he's bigger now after 12 months in the program. I also sure Ward, Welsh, and Walsh and Simmons have added some good weight too. We most likely won't see adjustments to this until Fall camp opens.

That makes sense. The times I did see Faith last year he looked huge. I'll be curious to see how much weight Ott and Meier put on, especially Meier. He was undersized last year but showed glimpses of being able to pass rush in that 3rd down raider package last year.

All that mis-matched LB has to do is breathe. Powell will go down on the most minimal contact. Just put him out wide and let him fly, do a stop-and-go, etc. He is ineffective "inside".

Agreed. The non-stop calls for Powell are somewhat amusing. The guy is simply an ok football player. He is basically about as good as Herb Grigsby. But for whatever reason, the fan base despised Grigsby and thinks Powell is awesome.

He is a solid 4th WR, will contribute a little, but will never be a large part of the offense. Hopefully he has a good year. The staff thinks he is improved from last year.
