Another publication that isn't thrilled with prospects for Iowa basketball. If they are anywhere near right It will be a very difficult year for the fans but especially the Coaching staff and players. There are always surprise teams and we might be one but Im not overly confident.

I can't say I can fault their prediction until we prove otherwise. Hopefully we improve enough to be more than an afterthought in predictions.

Unfortunately, it's probably pretty accurate. Ya never know what's gonna happen though. Fran hired some defensive specialist to teach him how to coach defense this summer. That might actually pay off.

If they’re right. Fran’s done

That's what I was about to write. We can't finish 11th in the BIG no NCAA berth and be half as bad as we were last yr. I mean Fran if he had any dignity should step away if htat happens. His contract is so iron clad he won't get fired. (thanks Barta) The only thing I'd hate about that worst case scenario happening is what kind of program reset would it be next yr... Assume Frans boys would both leave/not come. And who else? It'd be a heck of a rebuild if Fran were to leave either way. Maybe they think it'll be an easier rebuild with him than without I dunno but we can't have another year like last yr. Just can't.

It didn't in the Mizzou scrimmage. Same poor defense. Couldn't keep the guards out of the lane.

Nope, ain't buying it! 11th is just too low, even for us.

Sad :( none the less and this was suppose to be the year where it all comes together after a good showing last year. :(

Who knows? In 1978 that same magazine had us eighth in the Big Ten, and that was before finding out that leading rebounder Clay Hargrave was academically ineligible (and would never play again in an Iowa uniform) By the time the dust cleared in March, 1979, we were conference co champs and Lute had finally turned the corner for good after knocking on the door in the Sky King years 1976 and '77.

And, this 1978-79 Iowa team loses to Toledo in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament (after a bye in the 1st round). Link below. :( Starters - Lester, Boyle, Mayfield, Peth, and Waite. Bench - Krafcisin, Norman, Brookins, and Arnold (great bench). Link to box score below.

I've posted this before. I was in eighth grade at the time. I spent that whole summer cursing Stan Joplin's name in vain on every basketball court, and baseball diamond for good measure, that I played on.

Horrible free throw shooting didn't help either. And check out how many personal fouls were called. 55 for both teams. That was actually more common then, as was players fouling out.

If you want to relive the hearbreak ... :( here's some quick highlights with the Joplin shot at the end. Yes, this was played in Bloomington, IN.

I've gotten really pessimistic on this basketball team/season already. I went into last season way too upbeat and I'm going into this season way too defeated. The Big Ten isn't very good this year either so even a halfway decent team could finish .500 in the league.

Oh well. Guess we'll see what happens.
