Spencer Petras enters transfer portal

I saw him play in High School. I think he was quite talented. I would love to see him have some success.

Damn, Will, did you live in Marin County

Very nice country

I spent a lot of time across the bridge in Mount Tamalpais State Park

Watching the fog roll in

Have you been drinking? Some of your recent post have been a little negative. That’s not the norm for you.
I am plenty negative about a lot of things Iowa sports related, most of you chose to gloss right over those things. I can't call for people's jobs though when the end result for Iowa sports has been as good as it is. Kirk winning 70% of his games every year, I say let him coach how he wants, let him eploy who he wants and let him make the decisions for his program. But, I have been saying for a while the only way to change Iowa football is to cut it off at it's head and that it wouldn't matter if we put a donky at OC, the offense wasn't really going to look that much different. I think Kirk identified something a while back and that's this.... put all your eggs in the D's basket. It's easier to recruit that side of the ball to Iowa, we have an exceptional coach at the Defense position and I think realized if Iowa can be sound on D and have exceptional ST to go with it, Iowa wouldn't need to do much other than not turn the ball over to win the West division. I think they focus their recruiting efforts in those area's. I think they focus coaching, training and discipline in those areas (D/ST)on purpose. That's just me though.

I think it deliberate, I think it's been smart and I think it's won Iowa a lot of games. Ole man Kirk lays on the sword every season for Iowa fans. He knows what works. He knows how to win ball games and he doesn't really concern himself that much with how it looks, he's concerned on whether it works and gets the job done.

Despite their lack of success in the NFL I would have rather had Trey Lance or Zach Wilson. That being said, I’m not going to shit on the kid too much. By all accounts, an outstanding human being, he was just in his own head too much.

Btw, the last QB that Iowa brought in that KOK put his stamp of approval on.

Bo Nix was awful at Auburn and now will likely be a 1st rd. pick in the NFL. Definitely, not saying that is what is going to happen for Petras. But it does sound like he wants to get a taste of the NFL before he hangs up his cleats. With some luck and some timing, maybe he lands in a spot, where he can get coached up and play well enough to land in a NFL camp next summer. If that is his goal I am rooting for him all day.

This part, I disagree with.
Because we've had other donkies at OC. Yes, it did not LOOK different, but it certainly performed different. I'm with you that it's Kirk's system and framework. I actually think part of the problem was that in previous iterations, there was enough of a wrinkle...just enough non-Ferentz DNA (literally and figuratively) in the offense to click it in to place. Also, I think Brian failed to execute on it. Either finding the right players or getting them to execute within the system at the right pace.

Brian's had 7 years. And only once (barely) beaten the all time Kirk Ferentz averages in key offensive statistics. At worst, you should be around 50/50. He was 1 for 7. And at no time was there a multi-year slide in offensive effectiveness under Kirk, prior to Brian.

This part, I don't disagree with. I've said it a zillion times, I said it to my freshman son last year. If you go to Iowa for 4 years, there's a very good chance you will see a Rose Bowl, BCS, Conference championship game, a high quality bowl game, or a #3 Iowa beating a #4 PSU (even if it's a bit of a lark in hindsight). Something "big". Worst case, your timing is off and it could be a few years in between, but it'll happen soon enough you'll still have Hawkeye gear you wore in college. Because Iowa football, AKA Kirk Ferentz football....consistently punches above it's weight class.

I was just thinking about this same thing on how most of the eggs are in the defensive basket.

This isn’t just an Iowa thing as several programs seem to be focused on offense or defense. Hell, even teams like LSU are off balance. At LSU they lean heavily toward the offensive side.

It’s just sad that Brian struggled so much. Just an average Big Ten offense and Brian could stay as long as his dad stays.

What the hell, Spencer. Go to the Mt. West or the MAC, whatever, and get out of the pressure cooker that is Iowa and have some fun! You have had enough flack to last you a lifetime.

Unlike every other position a QB can personally cause losses. Other mistakes make a difference, of course as are other positions, but only the QB single handedly lose a game.

Spencer's inability to read defenses, move the pocket, respond to pressure plays. He wasn't helped by his supporting cast but he directly, personally caused the ISU and Illinois loses. He could not be counted on in any situation. Better by far than Padilla but inadequate in every other way. He really got worse with every season.

I cannot imagine the desperation of a team that signs Spencer Petras.

A 24 year-old with a ton of experience, it is worthwhile to role the dice on someone like that. If he lands in the right place and can get coached up, he can be a good quarterback.

I assumed he was going to be on staff next year.

This makes me think he thought he was the #2 if healthy and when Hill kept the job slinging 37% but kept winning, he decided to go knowing he was never playing again.

Naaah, he knew his days were numbered as soon as it was known CM was coming in.
