Speed.. Iowa hoops and football

Fran has brought Iowa hoops up from the doldrums with speed and SHOOTERS !! Time for IA football to do the same. Speed and (shooters - equals wide receivers). Basketball at Iowa - score score score!! Win many games and FUN to watch. Entertaining. No Lickleiter. Iowa football last season played an easy schedule. Won 12. and happy for that. Davis needs to open up the offense and use exotics please.. Clemson does. Alabama does. Arkansas does. This business of running fullbacks - slow afoot - or five yard passes to tight ends is boring. Sure, we beat cupcakes by nine or ten points, but Stanford, Alabama, and Clemson stomp us. Yep, we might have a turnover or two, but we might just score, score, and score! Fran proved it. Come on Kirk and Greg, turn our speedsters loose. Pass!!! Bielema pounds teams and then plays twos. Best formula for whole team. Fran plays ten guys. Not five. They all score. Just think. Perhaps we would not be HUMILIATED by halftime as we were vs. Tennessee and Stanford. ( Observe SEC games for tutorials )

I agree with your main points and I and others have been posting about our overall lack of team speed. Or lack of using our team speed. I would say that it was very pleasing to see Canzeri, Daniels, and Wadley burst through for many fast, long td runs. I would say that Tevaun Smith and Jerminic Smith have good enough speed for going deep and Vandenberg is sneaky fast because of this moves. The young receivers are supposed to be fast.

I would like to see how quick and fast D Mitchell really is as maybe he could be our best overall running back.

Duzey had real good speed at the TE position but we didnt get to see it this year.

What I agree with in your post is that the coaches dont take enough deep shots, even enough 30 yard passes, and the overall lack of exotics and counter plays.

But lets see what Davis, B Ferentz, and CJ can add to the playbook next season.

T Smith and Vandeberg had 1 long TD pass against MSU and had chances for two more.

I think if the hawks improve the running game even more then the play action deep passes will be a larger part of the plays next year.

Mitchell looks to have speed with good hands. Daniels, unless injured, doesn't look to have the speed needed. Wadley, speed and elusiveness looks to good to go. I get the part about play action passes, but too many times, CJB got sacked, smacked, pounded by d linemen. If the O line can't protect him for 3-4 seconds, then we needore screen passes, draw plays, and bubble screens. And, here is the time for an exotic or two EVERY game. Give all of our opponents a ton of plays they need to prep for. Open up the offense from day one. Why? So we have other defenses to look at and defeat in real games, not scrimmages during practice. The concept of run, run, run, a play- action pass, and wear down the opponent by fourth quarter is pretty good versus cupcakes. But, not when its OSU, ala, Clem, MSU, auburn, Stanford.etc. CJB had to play hurt. Should not happen! Get the ball out quick to speedy runners, elusive runners, yes, even big tight ends who sneak behind the defense because the opponents are defending speedy wideouts and tailbacks. CJ has experience now, lots of it. Unfortunately, half the year or more, he had injuries. Time for receivers to get open quickly, rb's to catch screens and run draw plays. Lots of guys playing and scoring, like hoops team. CJ is the facilitator. Keep him healthy. D King would be fun to watch on offense. Doubt we see that though. Canzeri was awesome, but hurt too often. Need depth, so play more guys in first few games to have game time experience. Then bring on MSU,OSU, ALA! With a healthy CJB.

Iowa's offense has developed very well under Greg Davis. Stats have increased every year running and I expect another leap forward next year. We had more runs of 30+ yards this past year then I can remember ever having under Kirk.

The biggest thing holding the offense back this past year was the offensive line, especially in pass protection. MSU and Stanford (Illinois and Wisconsin too, for that matter) used speed on the edge to disrupt our play-action passing game.

Iowa isn't ever going to recruit an Amari Cooper type that can just overwhelm any matchup on the outside. But to say we don't have speed or don't use it is a mischaracterization, in my opinion. Our offense is very similar to that of Bama, Stanford, and MSU. They just don't get mauled by good defensive lines.

I'm not a big fan of GD's schemes so I hope you have put in for this coaching vacancy, will move up from Florida if you get it, and straighten these coaches out! They need your detailed insight! I am seriously not a huge fan of GD, but I am not serious about you straightening anything out. You wouldn't know where to start, let alone how to scheme or game plan. I can see you in the coaches meetings, "Greg, I've never seen or been to a practice, but we need to run fast, run fast, shoot like the basketball team. We need separation, screens, draws, quick passes, double reverses, flea-flickers, fake fumbles and to quit running on first down because that's what everyone predicts. Greg, Kirk, I've put together the play book for you, let me know if you have any questions." Lol, you would be laughed out of any coaching meeting at any college in the country if you told them what you are telling us. But thanks for letting us know what the problems are and how to get better, lol. Some of you are very entertaining. I think you and Fran need to tell Brands that the wrestling team needs more speed also. All that tying up and technique stuff is really boring. Like I told you, I'm leaving for Ft. Myers next week, I would love to meet up with you and talk football!

This is correct and we all knew going into the season that OT was our biggest question mark because of the inexperience and lack of depth. That's all everyone talked about. Well, they gutted it out pretty admirably through the season and the injuries, but yes, when facing some exceptional d-lines, they struggled at times due to that inexperience and injuries. So why does some of you act surprised? Neither one of our starting tackles at the beginning of the year even played against Stanford. Good grief folks. The O-line was in flux the whole year due to injuries. They o-line success at Iowa and their zone scheme is so predicated on chemistry and I don't believe we had the same starting line-up for more than 2 games in a row at any time during the year. Why do think KF kept saying all year, 'I don't know how good we are?' One, because I'm sure there were times he didn't think we had a chance to win with the O-line he had to throw on the field, Smith and Canzeri out and CJ hobbling around etc., but some how they kept gutting out wins. Secondly, because he's thinking, 'If I could have this whole team HEALTHY at the same time, we might just be a championship team!' So he really didn't know how good his team was or could be, it just wasn't coach speech.
Iowa can field teams that can compete with everyone when healthy, what they struggle with is the depth that the Alabama's, Ohio St.'s, etc. have with their rosters of 50+ 4 and 5 star recruits.
Is there anyone who doesn't think the year could have been even better if not for the injuries? I can ASSURE you that if the starting line would have been Myers, Welch, Blythe, Walsh, Boetger (with croston to spell both tackles and guards when needed) and would have stayed healthy throughout the season, the experience and CHEMISTRY they would have developed by the time the played a MSU or a Stanford would have made all the difference in the world. Of course it would've! With that said, pair that with a healthy CJ, healthy backs, a healthy Duzey, a healthy Ott, etc. and this team may have been able to play for the championship. I have no doubt that they could beat a MSU or an Oklahoma and I think they could have competed against a Clemson or an Alabama. Some of you can complain all you want about speed, blah, blah, but the biggest issue is quality depth, and I think we are trending in that direction of having it.

Wow, long and drawn-out, there. But you nailed it with one word: CHEMISTRY

I would add "communication". The staff AND players did much better this year. Hence, the long Canzeri TD against Illinois, and Daniels's long TD against Minny. Players and staff adapted/adjusted well to pop some nice long runs.

And, yes, the OL wasn't "complete" enough throughout the year, and hence, some of the breakdowns we DID see in pass protection.
