Do we need a special teams coach, rather than splitting duties between Erb (RB coach) and Wilson (LB coach)?

Due to the # of coaches you can have the Division I level Iowa would have to re-assign other duties/cut someone to have a dedicated special teams coach.

Definitely. Special teams has arguably cost the Hawks both losses this year. Bill Polian (GM, Colts) says special teams will be the difference between making and not making the playoffs in the NFL. That's pretty important, to say the least.

Special teams grooms players for the next level, whether it is making the road squad, starting roster, or going on to the pros. Like anything, it is about technique, repetition, and execution. There seem to be some pretty serious flaws all season with the Hawk's units. All aspects have suffered breakdowns this year, and they continue to have problems. You can make a case that there was an 11 point swing yesterday between the blown extra point, blown field goal and the fake punt meltdown.

I think it's time that one coach is made responsible. If there is not a coach that CAN specialize in this aspect, it is high time to make room for one. Whatever that takes.

One of the years during Hodge & Greenway's tenure our special teams went south. I remember KF putting the upper classman back in on special teams to turn it back around. This probably would have prevented the kick off offsides penatly.

Pure stupidity is what allowed us to miss the fake punt. Sandeman said he knew it was coming when Wisconsin brought their punt coverage on the field. If so, he should have called a timeout. Compared to the time out called in the last 60 sec, making certain we had all of our options covered would have made a time out in that situation worthwhile.

ABSOLUTELY! 2 losses and you can put htme on all the special teams! 5 plays Saturday cost the game. The Offense did what it had to do and scored.... how wmany times did we punt... 1X? The defense was put in bad situations and when it did hold special teams blew it.
Missed PAT, Botched FG, Fake punt, Offsides on KO after a TD allows for a do over, The do over coverage allowed WI to start from mid field, KO coverage agin on another play allowed for them to start form midfield and both times the score on those drives.
Time to hire a SPecial teams coach! If we want to be serious about contending we need to have the proper staff to do so.

When you take into account the fact that currently, both of those positions coaches have their hands full with injuries, lack of depth/experience in the RB and LB positions, and considering we're down a coach since the ISU game, it wouldn't surprise me if special teams has suffered as a result.
