Sorting Through the Bowl Outlook for Iowa

But the Holiday Bowl would be left with a lot of unsold tickets if they were forced to take Minnesota. The Big Ten wants to keep their bowls happy.

Any bowl doesn't want Minnesota.
In Nashville, the Music City Bowl had the B1G for 4 years, in the early 2000s.
They thought they'd get an Iowa, Indiana, Penn State, etc., but got Minnesota 3 out of those 4 years.
Minnesota travel was so bad, that Scott Ramsey, said to heck with the B1G, and switched to ACC.
Now, they have a nice deal with JAX, as both bowls have a larger pool of teams, with, both the ACC and B1G.

Beginning of the season, the Music City Bowl would be a disappointment, BUT the signature win, has changed things quite a bit, and Iowa fans would be motivated to travel to Nashville.
Not sure about San Diego, but it feels like Iowa is going to Holiday Bowl, no matter what.

Well then maybe they make the Holiday Bowl take Minnesota. I always thought the Holiday Bowl was a little more prestigious and paid out more but the projected payouts look about the same.

I just realized the Big Ten has these clauses that say these bowls must select different schools each year:

HOLIDAY BOWL
(San Diego, Calif.)
1. Will feature at least five different Big Ten schools over six year agreement.

3. No Big Ten team will play in more than one Music City Bowl and one TaxSlayer Bowl over term of agreement.

I certainly prefer the Music City Bowl. If I can avoid the airport during the holidays, I'm in a happy place. Plus, there's a chance that the opponent would be Arkansas. That would be righteous.
Didn't I start a thread right after the Michigan game that said Iowa would be going to the Music City Bowl and possibly play Arkansas? Hmmm.....

Rob, unless the Sooners or Huskies lose again (which they very well could), I just don't see how two 2 loss B1G teams make the playoffs. Whoever loses the Ohio St./Michigan game would have 2 loses and pretty much eliminated because it is a 'recent' lose (and we know how these committees are about that). For Wisconsin to get in, they would have to win the B1G championship game which would give the Ohio st./Michigan game winner 2 loses. Unless you're thinking that Ohio St. beats Michigan and PSU beats Michigan St. and then Wisc. beats PSU in the championship game. That would seem to be the only scenario where Ohio St. and Wisc. get in. Problem is, I don't think PSU will beat Mich. St. which would put Ohio St. in the B1G championship game. It is going to be a REALLY interesting weekend. I don't think I remember a final B1G weekend with bigger games with bigger ramifications.
Wisc./Minn- If Wisky wins, they are in. If Minny wins, Wisky is still in if Nebby loses to Iowa.
Nebby/Iowa- Doesn't mean as much unless Wisky loses. But still lots of ramifications for playoffs and bowl lineup.
PSU/Mich. St.- PSU playing to get into B1G championship game. MSU playing the spoiler and for pride and have been playing better as of late.
Ohio St./Michigan- I think we all know the ramifications of this game.
Gotta love the B1G! I personally think and have always thought only one B1G team will get in the playoffs, which would bump the Hawks to the Music City Bowl (maybe ?). Even if we get 2 teams in the playoffs, if Iowa loses don't you think there's a good chance Minny could go to the Holiday bowl with the better record? Gonna be fun!

Michigan St. has had a miserable year following their playoff appearance last year. BUT, they have a chance to really throw a huge wrench into the playoff scenarios this year by beating Penn. St.
