Sorry Frank, We Screwed Up

Nebraska could have allieviated two decades of coaching charades by making the obvious choice to succeed Osborne.

Barry Alvarez.

Barry would have come back to his alma mater, brought physical toughness with him, and cleaned up the nonsense. And there was some issue about players getting discounted merchandise at Steve Schmitts legendary (in Wisconsin) Shoe Box store that left a bad taste in Barry's mouth about it was handled. (The NCAA suspended twenty five of his players for one game on the morning of the season opener). But it sounds like there may have been a deal in place for Solich to be the hand picked successor. And Barry was not going to be one of the those people who was going to coach into his seventies. He didn't have enough outside interests in his life to last decades as a coach.

So it worked out that he became AD at Wisconsin which seemed to be his destiny the moment he arrived in Madison. But he has admitted he would have to taken a good hard look at Nebraska.

Barry was also a candidate for the U of Miami about that same time. He loves south Florida and has a Spanish background. And Donna Shalala was the chancellor there at the time, someone Barry gives an awful lot of credit to for staying out of his way and letting him get the Badger program off the ground when she was at Wisconsin in Barry's early years. But Barry's wife Cindy nixed that idea. She's a Nebraska native. She probably would have supported him pursuing that job.

Nebraska should be so proud...Callahan, Pelini, and Riley have represented that great football program over the past 20 years. In the year 2250, Nebraska fans will still be talking about winning a championship in 1998 like it was yesterday.

I'm pretty sure it's part of the educational curriculum in Nebraska preschools. It's a level of brainwashing our military should investigate using. It's 100% effective.

Zager and Evans, who sang the iconic song "In The Year 2525," were students in Lincoln when they formed the folk duo.

I am not making this up!
