Sonderleiter almost blinded by eye injury

Ran across this article. They call his goggles his calling card. Here's a small part from it:

Post-op rehab meant bed rest. For two weeks, in a dark room, he had to lie on his left side “all day, every day,â€￾ Sonderleiter said. “I’d only get up to go pee. I’d have to eat sideways.â€￾

Eventually he could shift positions, but he was still confined to the bed and eye drops every five hours.

“It was six weeks of totally being in bed, not moving, can’t tense any muscles,â€￾ Sonderleiter said. “Any increase in blood pressure can cause your retina to detach from the wall of your eye.â€￾

My dad had a detached retina a couple years ago, and had a similar experience, though he was allowed to move around more than it sounds like Sonderleiter was. I had to stay away from him when I came down with the flu, because he would have been in real trouble if he'd caught it.

My daughter had a serious that required several trips and surgeries at Iowa. After one of the surgeries I overheard a Dr. explaining to what appeared to be a single mom of a 7-8 year old boy that he had detached both retinas and that she waited too long to get treated. The boy is blind for life. Iv'e thought of that several times over the last 11 years. Crushing news.
