sometimes the fans DO know better than the coaches

I think most times, the fans are more objective.

I call bull to all that practice knowledge. Some guys are technical practice players...some are gamers.

You can watch a live game and generally have a strong idea of the way to go. Coaches are too close to it.. they know too much

+Powell (despite weird drop int)
+Deeper passes

Canzeri still hurt. I say this is a push between coaches and fans.

No to Powell. He had a fantastic catch but dropped the easier one and muffed a kickoff and pinned Iowa back around the 10.

Powell makes plays. He will only get better with more PT. Willies needs to be on the field more as well. Willies, Powell, Smith and Hilyer/KMM. KMM just disappears in power 5 games.

Get your play makers on the field!!!!

So basically you are saying coaches shouldn't be at practice, watch tape at practice, because they are making decisions based on having too much knowledge about players. WTF?

Exactly. Aren't these people that say practice doesn't matter and some players just play well in games make so much sense. Shaking my head.

why do you think he is a troll? do you think fans know better than the coaching staff? i mean, they film their practices and review practice tape....so even if they nap during practice they can watch it afterwards.......some of message board 'fan think' is totally baffling....

Bingo. Thanks.

In KF's world, Watching how someone performs in practice tells you more how they will perform in a game, than actually watching them perform in a game. Cuz that makes sense.

how do you think coaches at any level in any sport decide who plays? why is this a 'KF' issue?

KF has spoken this on the radio this year - being good in practice doesn't predict anything -ala game performances Ball State and Iowa State followed good practices. So practicing good doesn't necessarily predict good success.....that being said, is practicing bad a good way to earn a spot on the field/court? coaches have to go with some body of evidence...

Actually, it does. Now, if someone comes in like CJ did today, I bet the game film helps as well. All of it matters and plays a role.

Exactly. We had someone posting earlier today that said Iowa should always start their 5 biggest OL. Really, it doesn't matter who blocks well? Also, let's play all of the receivers who are fastest. Really, Bill Happel never gets on the field back in Haydens' day. I just can't believe this is how people think.

Ummm, i'm gonna guess there's not a thing about college football you know better than Ferentz and the coaching staff except how to watch it on TV.

Of course I'm not saying that. I am saying that some times they lose objectivity because they have too much knowledge and lose that gut feel.

The fans I think can have better 'feel' for a guy in live action.

Just look at KF... how often has he put the right QB on the field? McCann? Christensen? Rudock? I remain amazed that Tate ever played for KF, not exactly KF style player.

For all the fans who have never coached and make comments like, someone is a gamer, have no idea what it is like to manage an entire team. If let guys practice lousy, but still play, you risk losing your team. Yes some guys are great athletes and can practice poorly and still perform well in games, but others can't do the same. I once had a wrestler who was very talented, but was absolutely lazy in practice. I couldn't allow him to do that and let all the other kids see that he got rewarded for being lazy. There is more that goes into decision making of who plays and who doesn't than any fan will ever know.

Gut feel? Is that like, eenie, meenie, minie, mo? Remember when Craig Morton played instead of Roger Staubach? How about Alex Smith instead of Colin Kaepernick. It happens even to smart coaches.

Excellent point made. What happens when laziness is rewarded? It's a team game and you have to coach the entire team.
