sometimes the conservative call is the right one

While i get on Kirk's case for his eternal conservatism - sometimes it is the right call.

That coach going for it on 4th down was the wrong call and it gave us huge momentum.

Pitt running hurry-up the entire 4th quarter... ouch. Even when they kicked that field goal they didn't take any time off the clock. We shouldn't have even gotten the ball four times in the 4th quarter, let alone scored four touchdowns.

That I agree with.

I'm not sure the QB was supposed to do that. He got his butt chewed following the play. I think he was supposed to poach it.

My general point is that Kirk always takes the conservative approach and I think thats irrational.

My point also is that always being aggressive isnt the right call either.

In that situation the Pitt coach should have punted it

I dont care that the TE was open it was the wrong call.

Yeah their coach coached the door right open for us.....To our credit the Hawks took advantage of the opening....but there is NO way if I am coaching a team and we are up 21 in the third....that I am in hurry up.
^and I don't mean I would go totally conservative....but there is no reason to be in a hurry in that situation, you tell them to start getting up a little slower etc...

It's obviously not always the good call. I love that we usually play safe and avoid stupid miscues by not being conservative. It normally helps us win.

Generaly this is even more smart because Iowa has traditionally had a great defense.

That being said, you have to know when to be aggressive. The two plays that stand out to me are trying to score in regulation a couple years ago against OSU and especially the fg on 4th and 1 vs ISU. In that game our defense was not good and in my opinion we would have been better off trying to convert 4th and 1 then to depend on our defense to stop them.

Anybody who wants us to just go for it all the time it stupid. That would hurt the team. The key is to know when to and when not to. That's the trick to being a good coach, knowing when to and when not to.
