Dropping the weight and getting into great shape (no thumb injury) has had a huge impact on his game. He is a step quicker than last season and his cardio is probably the best in the conference. I imagine yesterday took some gas out of the tank, as he had guys draped on him the whole game.

I will always view Matt's Hawkeye basketball career in two very contradictory lights:

1. It's terrible that he played during this era of struggle.
2. Thank heavens we had him during this era of struggle.

As difficult as Fran's job has been, it would have been many times harder without Matt Gatens.

I'm convinced that minus Todd Lickliter, Matt would have had a tremendous career. We're seeing the kind of player he always had the potential to be.
