Some Interesting Statistics

Iowa is fourth in the Big Ten in 3 point% at 36%

Iowa is fifth in the Big Ten in FT% at 73%

Iowa is second in the Big Ten in FG% at 47%

Iowa is third in the Big Ten in opponent's FG% at 40.5%

Iowa is third in Big Ten opponents 3FG% at 30.5%

Obvious stat that we are tied for fourth in the B1G is obvious.

We're pretty good, but not awesome.

Well, I omitted the many, many stats that make us look amazeballs (#1 in scoring, #1 in scoring margin, #1 in rebounding, #2 in steals, #2 in blocks, #2 in assists). I only wanted to include the stats that I would have identified as team weaknesses.

Bottom line: with stats like these, this team should have won more games.

If they win the next 11 all will be forgiven.

Agreed and I think that's where some of the frustration is coming from.

Reality check:

Iowa's rankings in selected stat categories in Big Ten games only:

Scoring offense - #1
Scoring defense - #12
FT percentage - #7
FG percentage - #2
FG pct defense - #11
3-pt FG pct - #6
3-pt FG defense pct - #7

Defensive stats in conference games are pathetic.

Good rankings for selected stats for Iowa in conference games only, besides scoring offense:

Rebounds per game - #2
Rebounding margin - #1
Blocked shots - #2
Assists - #2
Steals - #2

One thing to remember about scoring defense is that at the tempo Iowa plays offense teams are going to have more possessions and should score more points. IMO a more reliable scoring stat is point per possession. Iowa currently ranks in the top 40 nationally in that stat but have been awful in that stat recently.

Now being 12th in scoring defense is still not where you want to be. Also ranking 11th in FG defense is not good, but then again the conference champion ranks right behind Iowa in that stat.

Before the last four games the Hawks were #3 in FG % defense. They ran into two red hot teams in Wisc and Minn, and actually did play bad D against Indy. The scoring defense at #12 is to be expected as the Hawks score quickly thus there are a lot of possessions for the opposition ergo more points scored. The Hawks play pretty good D most of the time. They just need to do a little better at the end of games.

Pathetic is not a word I would use to describe Iowa's defense. I would use it to describe some of the posts I see on this site.

If you outscore the opponent than the #1 scoring defense and continue to outscore your opponent than the defensive stat doesn't matter

If you outscore the opponent than the #1 scoring defense and continue to outscore your opponent than the defensive stat doesn't matter

Unless you beat some teams by 20 to 25 points and lose to others by 3 to 7 to end up only 2 games over .500 in the league.

This team still needs to prove it can make the big plays down the stretch of a game to win the close ones. They've shown they can play with anyone...it's just finishing time where we:
1) Miss Free Throws
2) Turnovers
3) Miss Wide Open Shots over and over again.

Down the stretch of a game (last 5-6 minutes), we need to execute and finish with balls going in the basket. People need to hit big shots in big situations. That's the difference between 20-9 and 24-5 right now. It's not just one guy who hasn't gotten it done...it's the guys we call our leaders (Marble, Gesell, White, and dare I say, McCabe). I still say, if Gesell starts really showing consistency with his outside shot, this team becomes very difficult to beat. He's the lynchpin.

Wouldn't +/- from the average and from the league leader be more illustrative than just the ranking. Examples:

Iowa leads league in scoring at 79.4
6th ranked is at 67.3 = Iowa +12.1

Iowa last in scoring defense at 73.2
6th ranked is at 65.5 = Iowa -7.7

Using comparison vs. where each team is ranked vs. 6th ranked team off/def differential:
Iowa = +4.4
Michigan = +6.1
Wisconsin = +4.0
MSU = +4.2
OSU = +2.9
Neb = -2.8

In 2FG% Iowa is #2 at .464% compared to Michigan's #1 rank of .489% (-.025%) while the #6 rank is .434% (+.030).
In defense Iowa is #11 at .440% while the #6 rank is .432% (-.008): this is small for a span of 5 rankings. The #1 def rank is .413% (Iowa -.027%). But the difference for Iowa between offense and defense 2FG% is the same between the #2 and #6 offense as it is between #11 and #1 defense.

In other words, the defense gap isn't as great from Iowa's bad defense and OSU's #1 rank good defense as it is from Iowa good offense at #2 to the conference's average offense.

Where a team ranks isn't as important as the differential points between the rankings.

Or I just demonstrated that saying about figures and liars.
:cool:
