Sokol leaving

Not a surprise. He's not an Iowa kid, so he has no ties to the state. He saw the not so subtle writing on the wall. Assuming he's leaving because he wants to play. From what I've read, he was given a fair shot, and he got beat out. No shame in that. Good luck to him.

If I remember right, his mom (maybe dad) grew up in Iowa, his grandparents still live in Des Moines, and he has been a Hawkeye fan his entire life.

Edit: Just double-checked. Sokol was born in Des Moines and didn't move to Arizona until he was in elementary school.

John Wienke was pretty much a punter his SR year.
punter was that "other option for wienke. Lets not poke fun at john. He received a quality free education, and most certainly got laid at least a few times because he was on the football team.

No one is poking fun at John Wienke. If you follow the actual posts John was used as an example of a person staying with the team even though he was buried in the depth chart with no chance to play. However, my point was John had the punter option to get playing time, not just QB.

Where did I poke fun at him?

We have enough QBs...how bout a top WR or two?!

As for Sokol, seems like a good move. He'll get his degree from a Big Ten University, and get a shot to play once more season of college ball. Good for him.

Would've liked to see him play this year at QB. He's got talent to play somewhere that'll give him a chance. I know Rudock & Beathard played this year, why couldn't have Sokol? The Western Michigan game would've been a perfect time to see what he can do in a live game. He had a different skill set than the other 2.

Hope he winds up at a school where he can get noticed or seen on TV in 2014.

It'll be interesting to see who else leaves the program. We experience it every year like other programs do.

Certainly not surprising, and I can't blame him. He was on the third string and, honestly, who's to say he'd have kept that spot? Maybe Shimonek was going to pass Sokol on the depth chart in the spring and Sokol saw the writing on the wall. He's going to get his degree, so more power to him in his search for a place where he can at least compete for a starting gig (which wasn't likely to happen here this year).

Apparently our coaching staff doesn't have a clue how many QBs we have....lose Sokol and chase off Beneventi...nice job coaching staff.

Yeah, because we added one QB and offered another. I agree, nice job coaching staff. If guys you offer/get commits from scare off existing players and/or commits, it means they're doing a GREAT job, not just a "nice" job.

Oh, and as the previous poster said, you're trying too hard.

The kid has a lot of talent and simply wants to play. I don't blame him a bit and wish him well. Hopefully he has found a good situation and will have some fun. I think this speaks well of the QB's on our team now as well as the ones coming in.

At least we know this is his decision. At many of the "premier" programs (cough, couch... SEC), it may not have been.
