Social life in IC now for U of I athletes

I attended in 80's and then worked for Uof I for 3 years.
I was part the the last class that was of legal age at 19!
25 years later how has this changed U of I social life?
My last few years I lived above Mickey's! The stories I have from those days would fill volumes! Questions I have about IC now;
1. Is there now a higher expectation put on 18-23 adults?
2. Is it me or is there more of a focus on all atheletes, or just the High profile ones?
3. Do I want My kid to follow my steps to U of I? (when I was young and stupid, I was young and stupid.) I learned just as many lessons outside of class as in!

1. No-there are more cops, and newer cops that were getting peed on and having their gf's banged by university students while they were at DMACC. they want revenge and they don't give anyone the benefit of the doubt.
2. Yes-the cops want to make as many headlines as they can. I would love to see the emails being sent around the PD after this happened.
3. Yes-its a great place to learn both academically and outside of the classroom. I would recommend you groom your child to be very aware of all police officers and situations that he/she could find themselves in with police officers. I guarantee it will come in handy at least once while your child is there for their 6 years :) jk about that last part.... kinda

I think the big thing that is different about the social life of collegiate athletes today as compared to 1985 or so is that, given social media, the internet, and the ubiquity of ESPN, college athletes are incredibly public figures. Everything they do is potentially under scrutiny, so they are forced to a higher standard than they once were because very little can be kept a secret for very long.

Students who get their college FOR FREE should be held to a higher standard. I paid for my college, and yes, I experimented. If I would have made a committment to play on scholorship, I wouldn't have. (Boy am I glad I paid my own way)!!

I also paid my own way, thats why I ended up working for UofI!
I have an Inlaw who was a full ride Scholarship Athelete. He did keep his nose and everything else clean! I do not read IC police reports.
My concern is it seems that Atheletes carry a very large target in IC now.
Also the new rules reguarding tailgating, and the entire atmosphere in IC that seems to be determining for everyone, students, fans, boosters, atheletes when, where, and how much fun a person can have. when you exit I-80 should they post warning signs about what is allowed and not allowed in IC

Are you drunk right now?????

Are you drunk right now?????

Are you condemming me as an alcoholic because of when I went to school?
You can not order people to constantly be on their best behavior, They have to choose how they want to live their life, and hopefully they are successful in their choices!

The target has always been there. It's just nowadays everyone knows when something goes down. I played baseball for the Hawks in the early/mid 90s and I got to know a lot of the basketball and football players. Whenever we were downtown the cops were always "lurking" around and knew these guys by name. I don't think things have changed.

The problem as I see it is one of perception.

When the drinking age was 19 as it was when you went to school, there wasn't this hysteria about alcohol like there is now. (Look at the new tailgating rules for example. Somehow the OLD tailgating rules worked just fine for 50 years...)
Now, you could rob a 7-11 at gunpoint and be viewed as less a criminal by some than if you blew .08. This hysteria has led to huge numbers of PAULA and public intox citations that are lumped together with more serious offenses like theft, sexual assault and narcotic use.

media, both good and bad, is easier to access. If something happens now you find out within the hour. Back in the day it took a day or two and it would have just been a newspaper article. Now it comes across your cell phone.
