So why has Bethard become a pocket passer?

Seems like in the past he was most dangerous on the move but we rarely see roll outs this year. I do think he looks less mobile and slower this year although I dont know why but he is getting killed in the pocket. We cant get receivers open allowing teams to play tight coverage with one defender and blitz the crap out of us. Its working. Maybe moving him out of the pocket more would give him some time and allow him to run a bit more? Of course I may be thinking these things because I am not now or ever have been a Davis fan

well rolling him out to both sides, whether with a pulling blocker or more a naked bootleg, would certainly be going against the scouting at this stage in the season.

I totally agree with you that CJ can make throws on the run and I think some roll outs would help ease the pressure.

are the coaches worried about him getting hurt, can't play that way. roll him right with 3 receivers at 3 different depths and one receiver deep up middle of the field. let CJ use his instincts and he can still run.

roll to the left using similar routes.

let CJ loose.

I think there are a few different reasons.

1) Could be injuries sustained through last year that are still nagging him. I remember there was concern before the season that he was wearing a brace, etc. There was that surgery too. And maybe I've just forgotten about last season, but he seems far more "armored" this season than he did last season.

2) He's not too sure of his receivers or his OL to buy him time or space to make plays on the run. That said, why he doesn't tuck the ball and run, I don't know. Unless...

3) He's been turned into a game manager. He hated to be called that last year, and Kirk kept talking about how he wants to let CJ be CJ. But as I mentioned elsewhere, I really think QBs struggle in the Iowa system as they mature. For a variety of reasons, it seems like Iowa QBs for the past few years have been less sure of themselves, less like their earlier gun-slinger selves in their senior years.

Just my two cents...

I would bet the farm that injuries are the main factor. It takes away an option for the offense that we would otherwise have and desperately need.

Seems like the word "passer" is a misnomer.

(No, not saying he's to blame)
