So What Was Going On With CJ This Week?

Clearly, CJ was not the same qb that he was in weeks prior. His throws were off. He checked down rather than throw deep, and he seemed to prefer running to throwing. Did the coaches get in his ear? What was up with him missing huge on short throws and overthrowing his one deep throw.

I would love to see him think less and just go out and play, like he did against Pitt. He has become hyper conservative like the coaches.

Not sure the way to get more playing time is to not listen to coaches. Are you saying he should just do his own thing? He just wasn't sharp. It happens. Funny how when things go well people credit the players and act like they did it in spite of the coaches. When things go bad its all the coaches' fault.

KF said Hawks have two good QBs and I would say if JR doesn't play well next week CJ will be brought in.

same thing that's been happened to JVB and Rudock ... regression becoming a theme with this staff

Actually he look much like at Purdue in the first half.

Nervous in a home game, he didnt get a chance to get in much of a rhythm, he did lead one TD drive.

If he and KMM connect on those two simple wide receiver screens and they go for 7-10 yards apiece then things are different and we arent having this discussion.

I really think it is good right now to keep CJ and the offense engaged with his style of play. If things get stagnant after a few series with JR then bring in CJ.

Yea there was definitely an easily correctable issue on those 2 throws. It wasn't an accuracy thing. Other than those he played fine. Had one other bad pass to KMM but Rudock had a couple really bad passes too and most would agree he played well.

What I saw was a kid that seemed deflated. If I were CJ, I'd believe that I played well enough, in the past 6 quarters, to get more than chump change reps. KF wants his 4 yard routes and that really is that. It looked like CJ came to the conclusion that he isn't part of KF's old boy network and really has no chance of playing, barring injury, until 2016.

i think the word 'epic' is way overused today - but in this case, i think i is appropriate to use - for example, i could use the word 'epic' in describing this post as an 'epic' fail.

You guys are too much. He's a sophomore. He's a good QB, he did go long, he did throw inaccurately, he made nice runs, he took hard hits, he missed KMM who ran the routes correctly, he looked excited not deflated, he will play again this year, he's behind a Jr who has now started games that ended up in 12 wins who just happens to be pretty good himself.

My guess is this week he will watch film, practice hard and prepare for MD.

He's a good kid, determined kid, not a whiner, and knows better than posters what he needs to get better, not regress

It's not like he was that accurate against Purdue. He was 46% at Purdue and 40% vs. Indiana. Small sample I know, but it's not like we haven't seem some throws that have been off before this week. I still think he has a very high ceiling and I'd like to see more of him. If he could be more consistent, he's got all-conference potential.

As for the short throws, I can't say, because I wasn't at the game to see whether or not the deep guys were open, but check downs aren't a bad thing if there aren't guys open downfield.

Conspiracy orchestrated by KF. Duh.

Half of his passing plays were screens...so there's that. Most of the other plays were called runs. He got...what, 2 chances to throw the ball downfield?

I think some of that is on KMM too. CJ's release is a little earlier than JR's and CJ zips the ball a bit more too. Could be as simple as KMM's timing is based more on JR. This could be one of the disadvantages to a two QB system.

I still see CJB as a situational player. For whatever reason I think of his abilities as being best utilized in some sort of "quick strike" package to take advantage of turn overs deep in the opponent's field, one minute clocks, that kind of thing.

And I would hope if JR is having a bad day that CJ sees the field.

Wow, lot of psychology here...he looked like a 'defeated' quarterback? Come on now. Jake played well. He was the recipient of some good fortune, just like he was the recipient of the bad luck v Pitt and CJ the good luck. I am sure they will let both play again this week and then make a call for the rest of the year after the bye week.

Last week, we were discussing how screens showcased his ability to get the ball to the receivers quickly, allowing them to make a play.

This week, the screens are a conspiracy to keep CJB in the doghouse.

Iowa's been absolutely terrible at completing screens...from blocking to the timing. I'm just saying that screens are not really a means from which you can make a judgment, good or bad, about a QB.

If KF keeps with the two QB 'system', Ruddock should start and will have a hard time against MD. This team will be tougher than any we've played. If CJ is allowed to contribute, we will go 7-5. If CJ does not get significant play, 6-6 is probable.

NW isn't much this year so far, but I can't get over the feeling we get out - coached for this game, again.

So best case scenario is we go 2-4 in the second half of the season, and worst case scenario is we go 1-5. Oh, ok. Got it.
