So....IOWA athletics to give UNI handouts??

According to an article in the DSM Ragister, (Sunday, July 19) a 'Gannett' writer, who's generally
clueless when writing something in the Iowa City 'school' paper, asserts that
IOWA (and ISU by the way) should be helping to fund UNI athletics.

Jeff Charis-Carlson, who usually writes political fluff in Iowa City, quotes Michael
Gartner as saying 'ISU and UI would never even feel it' (if they funded UNI athletics).

Hey Jeffy..........did you ever consider that IOWA and I.S.who already throw a lot of favors
UNI's way, by scheduling their NON-Division I football team, quite often?

As a season ticket holder and donor to UI Athletics, it perturbs me that these
Schmucks want to give other people's money away.........as a start to what's wrong with
Charls-Carlson's warped perspective.

I'll try to link his banal article from Ragister.

without veering into politics... this shouldn't be much of a surprise from the Rag, considering the current landscape.

For smaller schools like UNI, or any schools outside of the BCS conferences, that cannot generate enough revenue to fully cover the costs of their athletic programs, instead of taking money away from the academic side of the school or this laughable solution of receiving subsidies from larger rival schools, why don't they look to revamp title 9?

The budget killer for most athletic departments is being required to offer the same number of scholarships to female sports as they do to male sports. With football requiring such a large number of scholarships (85 at FBS and 65 at FCS) that requires handing out a lot of scholarships to women's rowing teams, soccer, field hockey etc. that generate zero revenue. By the time a UNI awards 65 scholarships to women's programs, simply to comply with title 9, and pays for their equipment, coaching and travel, that is probably a couple of million dollars that UNI could save.

I realize no administrator or politician will try to take on title 9, but at some point, these smaller schools are going to run out of money or have no realistic chance to compete at a high level.

The big 4 or whatever they call it makes some money for UNI and Drake. It is a win for everyone invloved including the fans.

Did you actually read the column? It doesn't suggest any such thing.

If not Rosey, then what was the Michael Gartner quote 'they could give $$$$$ and not even feel it' related to?

Probably just throw a few million their way and Mikey Gartner and Jeff Charlis-whatever can
funnel some to themselves, as well, for their own 'important' causes.
