SIAR: Ferentz on the "hot seat"?

JonDMiller posted this year's version of whether Kirk Ferentz is on the "hot seat," as suggested by a writer at The College Football Matrix.

Iowa Football: Ferentz on 'Hot Seat'? Don't Buy It | Hawkeye Nation

In the 2 Star class, he lists Kirk Ferentz, among others, saying: “I was waffling in grading KF a One Star or Two Star Coach. He is the Midwest version of Jeff Teford. Chronic under performer with 4 of the last 5 years under predictions as a negative game coach. But tucked in those 5 was one decent year. Like Uncle Rico, most fans of mid-level talented teams love to live in the past. The 10-11 win season, the BCS bowl, the huge conference championship. The bottom line is the next bad season may be his last. The public is not against him but 6 and 7 win seasons are acceptable for only so long, especially when your fan base is as crazy nuts loyal as the Hawkeyes...â€￾

(major snip)

...While there would certainly be grumbling from some corners of the fanbase, I just don’t see Ferentz as being on any sort of ‘hot seat’. I think Iowa is another or so away from getting things back to the point where they can be a legitimate contender for the Legends Division as there is a great deal of young talent in the program.

What are your thoughts?

While a 7-5 record -- as many are suggesting for this season -- would be viewed as a disappointment, it also would not be a surprise, in my opinion. I really expect that it will take at least a year for the fairly significant -- by Iowa standards, at least -- changes in the coaching staff to settle out and for Ferentz to really realize what he has and any tweaks he might need to make.

Further, I would expect this to be something of a growing year for the young talent on the team, with the 2013 and 2014 seasons likely being really special.

7-5 should be the benchmark, and if that is Iowa's record then Kirk should feel no heat at all. 6-6? Maybe a little heat, but not 7-5.

I am very confident in the future of the program. I am expecting an 8-4 or 9-3 type season, which with the young talent on this roster is not a bad year at all. As others have alluded to, 2013 and 2014 could be setting up to be very special years.

In order for a coach to be truly on the hot seat, there has to be at least a plausible chance that he'd be fired. That's not the case here, and Kurt will be at Iowa as long as he wants, even if the mediocre seasons continue.

This is just silly. How many times has KF had more than 4 wins in a year?.......a lot.

I dont know why this is even brought up when Kirk is stacking the wins up right now.

Dwayne is correct. Donors got one Iowa coach fired once. Or more accurately, one donor. Program hasn't started to recover until recently. KF would really need to screw up before being on any sort of a hot seat. The closest he has ever come was recently. Some timely career changes, maybe encouraged, maybe not, and it's a new day

Herby Attack is correct. It usually always just a couple of plays, and couple of seconds that separate an above average year, or even an average year, from a special year.

It'd really tough to be a college football fan. Whatever team you choose to support.

And 2010 was thisclose to seeing us play in the Rose Bowl. It took miracles for four teams (Wisconsin: missed XP, fake punt; Ohio St: Pryor scramble on 4th and 12; NW: Persa TD as he tears his achilles; Minn: Onside kick) to beat us that year. Ah, what could have been.

And 2009 was thisclose to being absolute dog crap.

As long as Iowa has one more win than the clowns then every Iowa fan should be very greatfull for KF.

I don't agree with this. Doesn't really matter if I agree, or nor, but I never gauge the success of Iowa's football program by comparing it to ISU.

Wait until football season. If Iowa was to slip in one of the first 5 games (all that they should win) this football section will be a hard place to come visit. The "fire KF" crowd usually does not get active until the season starts, they are in hibernation right now.

Most of us here, hard core fans, understand that this upcoming season will be a struggle and most of us expect a 7-5 type season. But this kind of season or worse will bring out the ugly crowd in full force. I expect KF to start feeling some heat.

If there had been no coaching changes, however they might have transpired, I would have been yelling the loudest. Maybe time will tell if this would be justified. Pretty hard to prove or disprove, but I was not happy at all after last season. Upset would be putting it mildly.

It's pretty difficult to not get emotionally caught up in all of it. even for reasonable people.

KF is going to get a pass this year and he should regardless of what happens.

I think that he needs to go 8-4 or better in one of the next two seasons to not have major job security issues.

Surprised to hear Bruce say this.
Bud, no "pass" in one's 14th year.
