Should Wichita St. Be #1?

That's a weird amount of disdain for a random team.
For some reason I really wanted Iowa to win the cancun tourney. Now I just see them *** possibly the weakest 1 seed ever. Pressure to make them a 1 if they go undefeated will probably make them a 1. They would go 9-9 - 12-6 in the B1G. Making them a 4-6 seed. If they get a 1 I may possibly lay a small wager on that game, and I don't really gamble. The money may not be as good as another 1-16 game, but their opponent will have to be the most probable underdog in that position ever.

Didn't WSU make the final four last year? Must have been a fluke.

This. I'm willing to give WSU the benefit of the doubt here. Have they beaten many good teams? No, but they can only play the teams on their schedule, and they've been trying to schedule Kansas for years. They're a damn good team. St. Louis, while I think they're pretty good, don't have the same level of success that WSU has had recently, so I'm less inclined to have faith in them.

I've watched them play several times and I would describe them as...............meh. I know it's tough to play your best night after night vs Illinois St and SW Bumphuque A&M, but until I see them actually beat someone, I'm a doubter

Syracuse really hasn't been THAT great of a team. I credit them for pulling out some games but they have pulled out a few games they should have lost and losing to BC is just horrible. They have a great defense and pretty ugly offense at times. Honestly, our records could be reversed with some luck.

I agree with this, I am not all that impressed with Syracuse and I do not believe they are the best team in the country. I am not sure who is. Yes, they play great defense, but their offense is average at best and CJ Fair will shoot the ball every possession if you let him? BC got the ball in the middle of the zone countless times last night and did not hit the jumper from the FT line much of the night. They also got the ball to the baseline easily but were too indecisive with the ball and allowed Syracuse to recover. BC was 6-19 and they won at Syracuse. Syracuse easily could have lost their previous two games as well. I truly think that if Iowa met them in the tournament and had a normal shooting night, Iowa would beat them. I think Iowa's defense would shut down their offense. If the Hawks had a clunker shooting night, it could go either way, but Syracuse would not make me nervous as a fan. Also, at this point, I think WSU deserves to be number 1. They are the last undefeated team, coming off a final four. We will see how they make it through the Valley tournament?

I'm relatively confident that by the time the tournament comes around, either Florida or Duke will have separated themselves a little as the best team.

Wichita State has beat a lot of teams on the road by 10-15 points. Typically they are teams that are rated around 150 or so so it's not extremely impressive but at the same time, not a lot of teams would consistently beat those teams easily on the road.

I think it's fair to have them in the top 5 and as a 1 seed. Especially when you consider other top 25 teams have struggled with those types of teams at home and some have even lost to those types of teams.

I don't know about overall number one though. As far as I can see they only have 2 quality wins.

This seems a bit contradictory. You give them the benefit of the doubt and then say their best win is against a "pretty good" team...and it isn't an overly impressive win IMO.

Prediction - WSU is this year's Gonzaga...probably win their 1st game and lose their 2nd. I think the Sweet 16 is their ceiling.

I have a question. How many of the posters saying WSU should be #1, deserve the benefit of the doubt, etc. would have them as the National Champion if filling out the brackets today? They don't make my Elite 8 and I don't have to know who they're playing.

My opinion is to be the best you have to play and beat the best. While being undefeated is always a big accomplishment I don't think their resume puts them in that conversation.

My question was not "is WSU the best team in the country". It was "Should they be #1 in the polls next week".

Given that Syracuse was #1 and went down, and #2 FL struggled at home against a .500 Auburn team, and WSU is ranked #3, this seemed like a legit question. I still say Florida should be #1 next week, and WSU #2, given FL's far more impressive resume.

No, I don't think WSU is a team that will win the national title. I'd say Sweet 16, maybe Elite 8 at most, and then out. But assuming they don't slip up down the stretch, WSU will be a #1 seed. St. Joe's was a 1 seed back in 2004 or 05 with just one loss, and didn't have a tough schedule, either. They also failed to make the Final Four, by the way.

As for someone else who said Syracuse should still be #1 despite last night's loss.... Absolutely not. They just lost at home to a team that was 6-19 coming into the game, and needed some ridiculous luck to avoid losing their previous two games as well. No way they would get a #1 vote from me if I was voting. I also am not sold on Duke being all that, either, even though they've played well as of late. I remember a few weeks ago, a lot of folks on this board laughing at the fact that they were even ranked.

That may be how it goes. But WSU has enough of a recent track record for me to have no problem with them being ranked highly right now. St. Louis doesn't have the same track record to back them up.

If you had asked if WSU will be ranked #1 considering how the polls work, etc. my answer may be different. I would look at it the way I think the voters will look at it. Since you said "should" I am answering based on which team should be #1 IMO not what the voters are likely to do. The best team in the country "should" be ranked #1 IMO. WSU does not make my top 5.

1 - Syracuse (if they win at Duke...2nd if they lose)
2 - Florida (1st if Duke beats Syracuse)
3 - Kansas
4 - Arizona
5 - San Diego State
6 - Duke (move up to 4 if they win at NC tonight and then beat Syracuse Saturday)

This is basically what I was thinking about when I started this thread. Deservedly or not, I'm sure WSU will be #2 in the polls next week and Florida #1, barring either these two teams losing over the weekend.

Does it really matter? We're not talking the BCS here. They'll get their one or two seed - then they can show us if they are truly #1.

College basketball, y'all. Best sport there is.

It doesn't really matter at all. This is what we all have to resort to for discussion when Iowa only plays every couple weeks.

I don't mind most of your top 6, but to have SDS above WSU is comical at best.
